very true, it seems to be more of a niche for large companies and small e-book writers. I suppose with the rise of sites like youtube, a lot of people are neglecting video documentation and product comparison e.t.c because a lot of "fans" create good guides for popular products, which tends to mean a lot more in the eyes of a customer. well sure if you get a proper deal where contracts are signed, but I think a lot of work that flies around is small fry stuff which tends not to warrant a contract because it is insignificant. Business is always going to be a calculated risk, as long as you know a bad apple when you see one, its easy to walk away. the only other thing you can do if you are unsure about the future of a job, is moderate your content in a suitable way, which prompts the client to pay up as requested.... an example of this could be missing functions or access rules (providing you have control of the project). you also have to consider the fact that a smaller company may become bankrupt once your work is complete, if you don't have a proper one-on-one relationship with them then chances are you will never see your payment because they will disappear overnight. this is why I prefer to get at least 50% upfront, to guarantee some earnings for the work carried out. don't be put off by what I'm saying, this is all a big "what if" and most of the time these things don't happen, but it is better to be aware of it and not have it happen, than not be aware of it and lose everything you worked for. I've experienced this on both edges of the sword so I suppose I'm a little cynical, but I know there are good people and companies out there who will pay as agreed, so it shouldn't stop anyone trying.

Hello and welcome to WDF I haven't really come across many people that wanted video production but I suppose it depends on the company and what their customers expect from them. If you want to follow this route then best of luck to you, I'm sure there are many clients out there that would want video production. Personally I wouldn't work on the whim of **possible** payment down the line because in my experience, most of these people are scam artists. If they don't pay something upfront, then they're usually not worth bothering with. Sorry to anyone who is honest but most people in this day and age are not honest, they have excuses for everything and have no intention of paying you in the first place. Be careful!

Hi your web site looks good, only thing I'd say though is get rid of some white space where the logo and nav is. The less space for nav, the more space for content in my opinion. here's how I'd do it:

Hi and welcome to the forum! Well done getting some bites with shops, I spent a full day scouting for design jobs and ended up with just wasted time. For a full design job, 6 pages static with some images.... you really shouldn't go below £250 because its not like this job is copying and pasting stuff is it? you want to be paid for your time and skill and I personally wouldn't budge for anything below £250 with design. I'm quite new to freelance selling myself but there's no way I would build a web site for less than that unless it really benefited me in some way. With payments, make sure you get half the final payment in advance before you start, that way you can take care of hosting and domain names. I have a reseller account so I can host many web sites on the same account, but it only benefits clients in UK and Western Europe. The nice thing about a reseller account though, is that you can login to your clients packages and take care of anything very easily. Just be sure not to give full control of a site to any client until they have paid in full, otherwise they may take liberties and then shut you out. Reseller is the best in my opinion because no matter what, you can revoke access if something should go wrong.

Hi and welcome to the forum I'm new here too but I agree with what others have said, you only really need a text editor and image software to do most web design. Camera is good if you're looking to take your own photo's for projects but that requires extra work, most of which might not coincide with the jobs you take, still a useful tool to have though! good luck!

Hi I'm not sure you've posted this in the correct section as this section is for introducing yourself as a person. I had a look at the website and it looks fine to me, a simple design which is easy to look at and free of gimmicks, but I would say perhaps add another point to the FAQ section to make it absolutely clear what your company does. Why? because some people may look at that site and not have a clue what it is about, there is no "about us" page so it's not obvious if you don't know already. Good luck with your project.

Hello to everyone, my name is James! I've been a programmer and PC repair guy since I was in my teens and I'm looking into serious web design now. I've had a few people mess me about with design work before but they were either friends or friends of friends so nothing new there really. I've setup a few web sites for my portfolio and am ready to give paid design a try, having built back-end admin and CMS style applications from scratch before now. I code XHTML, CSS, Javascript, AJAX, PHP and MySQL for web programming and can also code with VB.NET and some variants of ASM. Recently, I contacted all the self-employed people I know about web sites but nobody seemed interested. I also spent a full day visiting all the shops in my area, trying to pass leaflets out but again nobody was interested. I'm not giving up that easily though! So last few days I've been reading forums like this and digesting some of the information you fellow brain-boxes have to offer, I think I will try following some of your marketing advice and see where it gets me.
