I am 28 and live in London, I am traning to became a web designer. I have got some knowledge of css/html and I am always learning new skills. I would like to know what is the best way to break into the web design industry as a career. The only way I can see how, is to build a portfolio of sites and work as a freelancer. If I choices to freelance what equipment will I need?

 

I understand the freelancing is going to be hard, but I am up for the challenge.

As you say, the best way is to build up your portfolio. Even if you can't get any real projects you can set yourself projects to build a site for an interior designer for example. Or if you don't fancy that, there is always charity work you can also try.

 

In the way of equipment you will need:

 

Text editor

photoshop or something equivalent

 

Not so much a camera as most graphics you would make yourself in Photoshop and any imagery you need you can get from a stock imagery site such as http://www.istockphoto.com/ but if you would like to take your own images that's completely up to you.

All you need really is a computer with a text editor and internet access, and loads and loads of determination.

 

Start by looking to do websites for friends and family, for free if not for a discounted price. When you are just starting out a few pieces for your portfolio is practically priceless, you will get nowhere without these.

I'm new here too but I agree with what others have said, you only really need a text editor and image software to do most web design. Camera is good if you're looking to take your own photo's for projects but that requires extra work, most of which might not coincide with the jobs you take, still a useful tool to have though!
