Google doesn't really care what CMS you use.
 
All Google cares about is the content and the navigation. If it can find it's way to every page on the site using your internal links then google is happy. If is it can do this quickly then so much the better.
 
What google doesn't like is having to wade through a load of scripts to get to your content. Which is where Wordpress can let you down. But keep it clean and neat with the minimum of scripts and you will be fine. THe trick is to replicate the site using wordpress. I did this for a restorer in Bristol last year and there wasn't even a flicker in his ranking. WHat did happen is he started to rank for a whole new set of keywords.

Sorry to say, but I don't know why people always think a website itself will pay off without any business in the background. Does it matter if you have 3000 visitors / month? Or 30.000?
 
How do you ever want to earn enough money by click-ads to pay for more than the hosting, what's the concept?
 
Usually I do websites for people who have a business running, like a craftsmen, a tailor or people who wanna sell stuff. They have a good reason for having a website, they will get new customers who buy their product, but the product never is the website itself. The only way to make money with just a website itself is having a really unique idea, like twitter. And even though twitter's estimated being worth couple of billion $, there were people in the media asking "how will you ever make money with this?" And they are right asking this question. How does google earn money? They became so important, that they sell the click-ads. Do you think google would be a billion dollar enterprise, if they just showed the click-ads provided by e.g. yahoo on google.com and get 0.1 cent per click? Maybe even that would work for google, but then we dont talk about 30.000 visitors / month but 10.000.000 / day least.
 
Think of a website as a print ad placed on a good spot in the center of your home town. 30.000 people will look at it every month. But this doesn't matter, if your ad doesn't say "call 1-800-joe-the-plumber" but just says "great informational site, now please leave accidently 0.1 cent in the box to the right if you didn't see it's an ad inside the ad".

Yeah you need a database like mysql. The code I wrote was just an example, it wont work exactly like that (little more is necessary).
 
I can't write the full code for you, so I suggest you read an php / mysql tutorial (the web is stuffed with those).

You want a shoutbox. Shouldnt be too dificult. You need 2 components:
1. Makes a DB connection and reads out all saved comments, echos them in a loop like

while(comments) echo '<div class="commentFormating"><p>'.$dbContent[$x].'</p></div>';
 
2. Displays a text box and a submit button, on submit make a DB connection and insert the new comment. Update 1. afterwards.

Addition: Try to play safe so, remove all html / javascript / php from the comment (try googling for "php xss filter" or similar)

2. addition: Beware of bots!

We just put up some free stock images for people to use. We have clients all the time who absolutely refuse to pay for stock, so we know the pressure it puts on designers to get good results with marginal images.
 
That's why we made our own free stock site. No people (i.e. no model release issues), and we've endeavored to make sure there's no branding etc, in the images. We're adding images all the time, so if you want to see something specific, send us some comments...

Well said, mOxby. My stats are dominated by Firefox and Safari, very little IE6, actually so little that I guess those couple of hits were me testing.
 
After having slept a night over what everybody's been saying, I came to the conclusion to do some IE6 fixes that dont take time. This means, no png-fix, and display:none of newly added stuff, till I'm in the mood and have time to fix it. Additionally there will be a box showing up telling the IE6-user to upgrade and why.
