I think I have solved issue three (at least as far as my example is concerned). It appears that if text is used with bullet points, the text is pushed down the screen by a space equal to the top line of text. Remove the bullet points and the text sits perfectly in line with the top of the cell. I assume that this is the case whether the website is designed in Dreamweaver or coded as I have checked the source code and cannot see anything wrong with it?

As a graphic designer by trade, I have been attempting to learn how to use Dreamweaver (coupled with a basic understanding of HTML coding) for many months. During this time I've found a long list of issues with Dreamweaver that I cannot make sense of. One such example is why it is called a WYSIWYG program - an inaccurate description as far as I can tell. For example, I create a webpage with a logo and navigation bar at the top, a flash ticker tape bar beneath, and the webpages custom content (words and images) below. I ensure the table rows are governed with set heights. The page looks fine. I then duplicate the page (by saving as) to use as a template for another webpage in which I am only changing the unique body content. I need to delete the original text and replace it with new wording and images. When I do this and attempt to combine two cells within an empty row, or delete a row within the middle of the page that is empty and not needed, it sometimes visually moves the positioning of the rows and cells at the top of the page. Sometimes the visual position of a row has moved, but the number of pixels assigned to that row remain the same. Other times the actual pixel height or width of the row will have changed as well! The rows that change were not required to change, or asked to change, but they change anyway. Often it is impossible to then move the rows back into their original visual position, but if the rows fixed pixel height reads correctly, it often still displays correctly when viewed in a browser. This brings to the second issue that has me baffled. Dreamweaver will not allow me to change certain table rows to any size below 18 pixels, but on the very same webpage I will have other rows of 10 pixels that display correctly! This issue has been a real cause of frustration. Cell padding and spacing is set to 0 and there is no content, but the row refuses to be set to any size below 18 pixels. The final issue I have not been able to solve is to do with content positioning within table cells. I will use a recent simple example. I created a table with two columns. The left hand column was made up of 3 cells, the right hand column was one large cell. The three cells in the left hand column had fixed heights as follows: The top cell was 18 pixels high (because dreamweaver wouldn't let me use anything less!), the middle cell was 100 pixels high (and was filled with an image of 100 pixels in height), and the lower cell did not have a fixed height so would stretch vertically as necessary. The single right hand cell did not have a set height, but relied on the textual content that I placed in it to provide it's height. I selected this body of text and set it with a 'TOP' vertical positioning. Within the dreamweaver display window the text sat perfectly at the top of the cell. But when I view the webpage in a web browser the text no longer sits perfectly at the top of the cell. It now sits one line further down (as if an invisible line of text was sat at the very top of the cell above it). I have tried everything I can think of to find a solution to these three issues that crop up daily when I'm learning to design websites. I have been learning on and off for many months and I should have learnt more html by now, but these problems with dreamweaver have caused me so many wasted days trying to find ways round the problem - sometimes completely re-designing whole web pages around the issues - that I have not had the time to learn as much coding as I would have liked. I assume that these three issues are common place and I'd be so pleased to find out how I can get around them using Dreamweaver. I know the very best long term solution is to learn html/xhtml, but once I have these issues solved within Dreamweaver I'll have the time to do that. Is no-one able to help with this issue? The chap who owns the website has taken a few weeks off whilst looking after his partner (who is ill), but now he is wanting to get back on with the project, but I am no closer to finding out how to get access to the .com data. If anyone could provide any help, guidance or insight into what's going wrong I'd be very grateful. Cheers

Thanks for your quick reply and input. Bob owns the company that owns the two domain names (.co.uk and .com) BT Connect are his current hosting provider and provided the ftp login data for the .co.uk address, but did not provide accurate information explaining how to gain access to the area of the server that holds the .com html data. It is EasyNet that say they no longer provide hosting for Bobs .com website. He has asked me to try and sort this out for him as it is (he says) extremely important, but regrets he is currently unable to help due to his present situation. It is out of respect that I have agreed to try and help with this matter but I have run out of ideas and experience to allow me to progress any further. BT will only speak to the registered account holder (Bob) so I cannot call them either.

I hope I have posted this query in the right area. Trouble is I am not sure what the exact problem I am facing is based upon but I thought it could be server related in a way... A friend of a friend of mine (who I will call bob) asked me to update a very old website which has not been touched for maybe 10 years. It was setup for a company when he was one two of the co. directors and he did not have much dealings with it. Since then his partner left the company and he now wants to update the website. After a couple of weeks research he has managed to provide me with some details concerning the website setup. He gave me a BT Connect administration user name and password, and the ftp host, login and password details which he was given by BT to transfer the website data. Trouble is, although I can log onto the hosting server via ftp, the currently live website is not there. Data was present for an even older version of his website. The ftp details he gave me point to a .co.uk domain, but the site that is still live is a .com addressed website. Also, when I type in the .co.uk domain a redirection attempts to happen but fails every time due to the server not communicating. I can't gain access to the data that leads to the display of the .com web address, and having searched every avenue of the BT Connect control panel and researched into every other option I could think of I am at a loss to know what to do next. Bob told me that BT say that there is a link from the free .co.uk hosting package (I believe he purchased a package providing him with telephone and broadband and which came with a small amount of free webspace to create a basic website) to the purchased .com business hosting package, but that's all the info they gave. I do not have the host directory information for the .co.uk ftp login and I wondered if that could be the answer (though I doubt it as I seem to already have access to the complete portion of the server). The BT Connect control panel confirms that Bob owns both the .co.uk and .com domains. The only other addition of confusing information is that Bob tells me he used to pay a company called EasyNet for hosting of the site. EasyNet have since confirmed that they have not been hosts of the website and deleted all Bobs details from their system in 2005, but when you click through the website information links within the BT Connect control panel it finally directs you to an EasyNet webpage that says, "Error This page is no longer active." So all I need to do is gain access to the .com data, but I dont know how. And I have tried getting the information from Bob and requested he speak to BT to obtain more information. Unfortunately his wife has just been diagnosed with a fatal illness and he is not able to cope at the moment, hence this rather long post and request for help. If anyone has experience with BT Connect or can offer help regarding this I'd be so grateful.

I absolutely agree. And I know that there is so much to learn! I hate dreamweaver to be honest but due to my lack of coding skills, when a client wants something that I cant yet code I have to rely on the wysiwyg program. Thanks.

Sorted the problem. Turns out it that the line of text was set to be a new paragraph which adds a blank space. Looks like Dreamweaver actually adds that command in automatically each time text is pasted into a blank cell. Removed the paragraph command and line vanished.

I'm having an issue with an annoying empty "line break" style space that continually appears above text that I drop into a table. For example, Let's say I design a simple table made up of just 1 row and 2 columns. In the right hand cell I place an image and in the left hand cell I paste in a chunck of text. I then ensure both cells are aligned to sit at the top of the cell/row. In Dreamweavers design view the top of the text sits in line with the image. But when I view it in a browser the test drops one line leaving an unsightly space where the top line of text should be. I've taken a look at the code and tried a variety of things to stop the empty line appearing but I can't seem to solve it. Any idea's please?
