  1. Hi all! I just wondered if some of you could answer a few Q's for me....(in summary) My knowledge of web design at the moment is pretty much constrained within the realms of CSS & HTML and I'm becoming very bored and stale with it. I really need to start moving forward!! I'd love to learn Flash for slideshows, but I have concerns about its compatability with IE. So, my wondering eye keeps seeing "Jquery" all over the place. I don't really understand Jquery or JS, but I'd like to learn more about what they do, how they work and how they work with each other? As a novice to web design, am I correct in assuming that JS runs just animation, or does it serve many more functions? If so, what are they? Also, how does IE treat JS, because I keep seeing "Active X" prompts when loading a .index page with flash loaded? Does Jquery rely on JS to work, and is it compatible with early versions of IE? If I decided to create a slide show using Jquery, which framework version should I download, and If I decided to create a very complicated slideshow, should I download a different version? I hope some of you could help me with this - I'm totally baffled by it all!!!!!!! Thanks in advance, I appreciate you'll taking the time to read this!!!!! Riggers....

  3. Thanks very much for the advice - I'll check out the fix.
  4. Hi all! Wondered if you'll could give me some advice. I've loaded a PDF file into my webpage which opens fine in FF, IE and Opera, but will not open in Safari, Chrome and Seamonkey. When I try to open the file in the mentiond browsers, I get the following error message:- "The adobe acrobat/reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a web browser. Please exit adobe acrobat/reader and exit your web browser and try again" Here's the link to my site - http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk/ourtreatments.html You can see the link for the PDF in the top left corner, just below the header. Thanks all - I appreciate you looking! PS - I wondered if there are any other popular windows browsers that might be worth looking at for compatability...
  5. Thanks mate. I made the backround layer transparent and also made the file size to minimum. That seems to br loading a lot quicker now.. Cheers. Riggers.
  6. Hello. I've created a PDF file for my 2nd website which I've created & saved in photoshop under the following settings: 'Preserve Photoshop for editing' 'Optimize for fast web preview' 'Compatability - Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)' '[High quality print] (modified)' 'Encryption level high (128 bit RC4)' The problem I have is that when I upload the file to my web server, it takes ages, quite literally about 15 mins! And when I preview the PDF in my web page, it takes about 2 mins to download. I've tried this on several different PC's, at home, work & friends so I know its not a broadband issue. The total file size is 32mb and downloads at between approx 2 - 5mb per second! ARGHHH. Oh, by the way, I created the PS document in RGB at 8 bits. I have another website created on my desktop with a PDF loaded into the root folder and when previewed, fires up almost instantly! SO, I must be doing something wrong... Heres the link to my site. http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk/ourtreatments.html You can see the PDF link at the top left hand side of the page. Could someone have a look for me please. Thankyou all so much! I really appreciate you all looking! Riggers....
  7. Cheers mate thats great!
  8. Hello all. I hope you can help me. I'm trying to add a background to indicate the current page of my links in the left hand nav bar of my website. I've managed to acheive this in my horizontal nav bar, but no joy in my left nav bar. I haven't actually created a 'class' for it at the moment because since it didn't work, I deleted it. Could someone give me some advice? http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk Thanks very much all!!
  9. Dude, thankyou so much for the link!!!! That will be really useful - superb! Thankyou again.
  10. Thanks for the advice buddy, I'll be sure to look at this! Thankyou.
  11. Hello everyone! I could do with some advice regards CSS/DIV layout etc. I'm half way through my second site now and I've got myself into a right mess in terms of naming ID's and class selectors. I use DIVS heavily throughout my page layout and find myself naming classes and ID's uniquely. Problem is, when I go into my style sheet to tweek stuff, I spend ages and ages scrolling down trying to find the selector I'm looking for and often, I end up naming selectors based on their relation to each page, but end up with divs and dozens of different names all over the place!! IE: id="footer", id="footertableindexpage", id="leftnavbar", id="lowerleftnavbarimgholderaboutuspage" class="cloumnsizeleftcontactuspage" class="columnsizerigththomepage" After a while, I struggle to think of an easy way to name an ID for selectors which are less complicated. When my pages get too populated, should I be using a different style sheet for each page? Thanks all!
  12. Thanks buddy - I appreciate the help! I'll let you know how I get on!! Cheers. Craig..
  13. Cheers dude! I'll have a look at this.. Thanks again. Craig.
  14. Hi! Thanks for your reply and advice. I like the fact that you're learning also - its useful for us folks to exchange our experiences. I'll be sure to pass on anything I pick up which might help you also!! Thanks again.. Craig..
  15. Evening everyone.. I'm keen to learn creating pure CSS based drop down menus - I've heard so many bad things about them being difficult to code because of different browser compatability issues. Could someone advise? Perhaps a small CSS sample maybe? Thanks very much!
  16. Nice looking website - in IE anyway! You seem to have floated all the images correctly to the left, but are these nested inside a parent elemment which is much bigger on the long side? Ie: do all your image sizes, when added up together, approx match the width of your page container? If the page container is much wider, then some of the images may collaspe below each other when rendered in other browsers. Might be worth trying to clear the floats though. Sorry if that doesn't work, best I can think of! Good luck!
  17. Whoa dude! Being a Web designer I would have thought you should be able to do this yourself! I'm a novice desinger but even I can do this - sooo easy!
  18. Hello all I hope some of you might be able to help please. (Gotta be a common issue this one) Well, I've got major padding and margin issues near the footer of my index page. Just above the footer, I've created a table with 4 images (facebook, ebay etc..) I gave the table an ID and set the padding and margin values to '0px' using CSS. All the browsers I checked render the page just how I want it, except that damn IE6,7! I've managed to acheive some nice spacing around the text and images, but IE6/7 just wrecks it all and seems to collapse everything to close to each other!!! I wondered if someone might have a solution for me.. Heres the link http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk Thanks in advance everyone, I appreciate you'll for looking!
  19. Hello everyone! I really hope you'll can help. I started a new site recently and I uploaded all the files to a temporary URL http://www.riggerz.org just while I waited for a more suitable domain. Anyway, once I received the new URL http://www.beautyboxworcester.co.uk I then pulled all the files down from my temporary URL and left the directory completely empty. Then uploaded everything to the new URL. Anyway, I started on adding keywords and description tags etc. However, when for example I type 'beautybox worcester' into google I get directed back to my old URL. So, I had a go at loading a .htaccess file into my old URL root folder for a 301 redirect - this still doesn't work though. There are a few different types of code and I'm not sure which one to use though. Can someone advise, and if so, how long would it take for google to redirect ths URL?? (oh, and both servers run LINUX) Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine on RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L] Options +FollowSymlinks RewriteEngine on rewritecond %{http_host} ^domain.com [nc] rewriterule ^(.*)$ http://www.domain.com/$1 [r=301,nc] Heres a link to the site which advises on 301 redirects http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php Thanks in advance all!!!!
