  1. Hi I have an HTML site I'm building. It uses jquery for bxslider image slides and slicknav responsive menu. I have created normal anchor tag links from the gallery page (http://ettifordcottages.co.uk/newsite/gallery.htm) to the page with the property descriptions (http://ettifordcottages.co.uk/newsite/cottages-and-booking.htm) and these links are all jumping to the bottom of the targeted page, rather than the anchor tag. If I remove the bxslider, then they link correctly, so seems to be the bxslider causing the problem. There are also links from the property desc page to achors on the gallery page. This work OK as bxslider is not being used on this page - I am using a gallery but it's the camera jquery one. The Javascript is being loaded thus in the header : <script src="http://ajax.googleapis.com/ajax/libs/jquery/1/jquery.min.js"></script> <script src="js/jquery.slicknav.js"></script> <script src="js/jquery.bxslider.min.js"></script> <link href="css/jquery.bxslider.css" rel="stylesheet" /> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ $('.bxslider').bxSlider({ mode: 'fade', speed: 1500, pager: false, auto: true, pause: 4000, autoStart: true, controls: false, captions: true }); }); </script> The slicknav function is being called just before the closing body tag: <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function(){ $('#menu').slicknav(); }); </script> </body> I have googled this endlessly but can't seem to find anyone who's had the same problem! I'm not a Javascript coder at all and I'm hoping someone may be able to see what the problem is and how to fix it, or at least some suggestions of things to try as I've completely run out of ideas. Thank you for any help Jennie
  2. Hi I want to display a video on a website as part of the banner, so I want it to run continuously without any control, much like it would in Flash. The video is a royalty free stock video purchased from Fotolia. I thought about doing this via YouTube but have 2 concerns: 1. Whether licensing permits you to publish on YouTube 2. Whether I can get rid of the controls and have it autoplay continuously So I've been looking into embedding the video using HTML5, and I've been reading the instructions from Dive Into HTML5 about videos, and I'm panicking about this H.264 codec. If you are just displaying a single video on your website, would this be free from H.264 licensing? I can't seem to find any info about using it in this simple way. Any advice would be very much appreciated, or any suggestions/recommendations about the best way to do this. Thanks Jennie
  3. Hi thanks for the reply, I had done this already but not in the right place! Putting it on the #nav li ul sorted it. Thanks again.
  4. I have a problem with a pure css dropdown menu since I added an absolutely positioned div near the bottom of the page to anchor some text into a specific position. The dropdown appears on mouseover, but when you try to mouse over the submenu it disappears. I'm not using any javascript for the menu. Since I realised the problem, I've isolated the code to the one page where I need to have the extra div with the text, but I cannot think of another way to position the text where it needs to be - just over the image it refers to - without using relative/absolute positioning, and it seems that this is causing the problem for sure, but I don't understand why. This is the page: http://www.cottagesinstives.co.uk/lowersaltings_apartment.html The dropdown menu that's affected is the 'properties' tab. The image and its text are at the bottom of the page. This behaviour appears to be consistent across all the browsers I've tested - IE, Safari and Firefox. Any suggestions would be most welcome. Thank you.
  5. I've had a reseller account with them for several years. I initially went with them as at the time they were the only company offering unlimited websites for the monthly fee, as well as databases, bandwidth and many other things that at the time other companies were charging extra for. I've always had good service, support tickets have been responded to very quickly, I find usually within an hour. Compare that with having to contact 123-reg for a customer recently - they took 2 days to respond to a support ticket and sort out FTP access (or lack of it), a pretty basic requirement of web hosting. I agree that not having telephone support is sometimes a little frustrating, but I've rarely encountered a support system that wasn't. Also when you have telephone support, it's the luck of the draw whether you come up with someone who knows the answer to your question at the other end. In the past I've had more success googling it. So in some ways I prefer the online support system. I'm really happy that I chose them, their support database is pretty good, and constantly being improved, and I think the service is excellent value for the money. I found it particularly useful being able to add extra databases without extra charge to test out different shopping carts and other applications alongside each other. I only host on Linux and no wish to use a Windows server, so can't comment on that either. They only started offering Windows servers more recently. Hope that helps. Jennie
  6. Hi Charlie Thank you for your reply, I've not explored custom reporting in GA so I'll look through that and see what can be done. I sort of assumed that if the pages were correctly linked using the additional tracking code, then the pages on the booking system would be treated as part of the site, but it appears not. Thanks too for the kind remarks about the site design - it's really nice to hear you say that. I've been busy on link building as the domain name keywords are super competitive, but letting up on that now to expand the information section on the site. Best wishes Jennie
  7. Hi I have built a website that uses an online booking system. The booking system is on another URL / server but integrates with the site, and I wanted to track all the pages as one site. I looked at the Google help pages for cross domain tracking, and installed the extra code snippets on the relevant pages: My pages: _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); _gaq.push(['_setAllowHash', false]); Booking system pages: _gaq.push(['_setDomainName', 'none']); _gaq.push(['_setAllowLinker', true]); _gaq.push(['_setAllowHash', false]); It's tracking all the pages OK and they are showing up in the visits, but in the referral section of the Analytics reporting, every time someone clicks through to the booking system from the main site or back again to the main site from the booking system, this is showing up as a referral, even though it will be one visitor, and it's inflating the number of visits. Have I done anything wrong in the setup, or is this how it's supposed to work? Is it possible to avoid this happening if so? The site is here. Many thanks as always Jennie
  8. Hi I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I have a client who has paid his current webdesign company £100 to transfer the domain name (a .com) and hosting over to my hosting company. He has recently reregistered the domain name through his existing company. My hosting company says it is not possible to transfer the domain name within 60 days of reregistration, his company has said they can do it and charged him accordingly. Subsequently they have sent me and my client an EPP key on a noreply email. They are still listed on WHOIS though as the admin contact and nothing else is happening. I have bounced back and forth with my webhosting support, but I am still not clear as to how I can sort this out. Is it definitely possible to get the domain name transferred within the 60 days or should I just stick with trying to get them to change the nameservers for the time being? I have set up a domain reference and hosting at my end, so a change of nameservers will sort the hosting, but dealing with the original company is tricky and there is no control panel access granted, only ftp. Also, can the Admin contact change the admin contact themselves, or can this only be done by the Registry getting them to authorise the transfer? Many thanks for any help, don't know what I would do without this forum! Best wishes Jennie
  9. Hi Webdesigner93 and thank you for letting me use your script. I will certainly try it as I appreciate the added security. Thanks again
  10. Oops I just noticed an error in version no.2 of the script Unfortunately it wasn't the one that was causing the problem I have attached the corrected file feedback.php
  11. Hi I am using a PHP form mail script that I have used several times before without any problem. I have set it up and redone it from scratch twice and I just can't get it to work. I have tried it on two different hosting accounts, one of which is already running the same script without any problem, so I must have done something wrong but I can't for the life of me see it, and it's not that difficult a script! The contact form is here. The php script is attached The script is not throwing up any errors, nor does it seem to run, nor is it not found. If I leave any required fields blank it doesn't flag up the error. If I complete the form it doesn't go to the thank you url. It's just like refreshing the page! Any ideas most gratefully received ! Thanks feedback.php
  12. Hi Does this help? http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405461.html It opens OK in Safari on my Mac
  13. Thank you to everyone else who helped, too.
  14. That's perfect, thank you so much. So simple even I should have got it! Many thanks
  15. Hi All Can anyone figure out a way to do this because it has me foxed. I need to have a special menu on one section of this web site with icons, but the guy I am doing it for is quite particular, he wants text-decoration: underline; on all the hovers. My problem is that I don't want the icon image to be underlined on hover, just the text itself. But the icons do need to be clickable, and so need to be part of the link. I've tried to split them but in this scenario all my styles start to conflict and I can't unravel them to get the layout right. Also it seems very messy to try and do it that way. I've also tried to target the images to remove the underline to no avail. Initially I had solved this by using images with backgrounds, which then obscured the underline nicely. However, now my guy wants the current page menu item highlighted with a darker background, so I now need to use a transparent background on the images, hence the return of the underline problem. On the page at the moment only the third menu item down (Simple to install) has the transparent image, I didn't see any point in doing all the transparent images until I could find a way around the problem. So you need to roll over that item to see the problem. The page is at this address The site is not live. Any ideas as to how I can work around this will be gratefully received! Many thanks as always for your help

I think I would probably password protect the folder through the control panel for the hosting. My hosting company control panel has an option for this, I don't know if it's an option for you.
  17. Thank you so much for all your input on this. You guys are very clever, I don't think I could have found a CSS solution to this one, elegant or clumsy. I am just grateful to get it working by any means fair or foul. There is still a small problem in IE7 though, if you move onto the menu tab that opens the drop down, then move away anywhere else other than to another menu tab, the drop down menu gets stuck and doesn't disappear. Goodness knows what to do about that! At least it works though. Thanks again! Jennie
  18. Hi Can anyone see a solution for this problem? I'm basically using the body id to target in CSS the menu item styles, so that the style changes according to which page you are one. I'm also using a CSS drop down menu that uses csshover.htc for IE. I've only just noticed this problem in IE7, whereby the drop down menu works fine on the home page, but on the page where the drop down menu parent item is targeted by the body tag, the drop down stops working. For example www.lake-districtselfcatering.co.uk/design/hardcragg_hall.html There is only the home page, which is fine, and the two properties pages. This problem is specific to IE7, IE6 works OK. I'd used the same technique on another site and the problem is the same there to. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this as nothing occurs to me at the moment? Many thanks Jennie
  19. I think you need a Javascript script, like one of these: www.javascriptkit.com/script/cutindex1.shtml
  20. I'm not sure I understand your question, but if it's what I think can you not just remove the background colour for the div inhalt_02 and let the background image below show through? Hope that helps! Jennie
  21. There's also a snapshot tool in Acrobat Reader under Tools - Select & Zoom - Snapshot Tool It allows you to select an area of the PDF and copy it to the clipboard. Jennie

I couldn't see an obvious reason why it was happening - probably just a FF bug, but I have often had cross browser issues with overflows and I think it's best to avoid using them unless absolutely necessary. I haven't seen your full design so I may be mistaken, but if you've got a number of images at fixed heights, there isn't going to be a need for the overflow. Best regards Jennie

Hi It is being cause by the overflow: auto; here: #portfolio-home { width: 440px; float: left; display: inline; overflow: auto; margin: 0px; } If you remove that it works OK. Best regards Jennie
  24. Hi It never looks right in DW design view, especially CSS layout. Looking at your page though you haven't yet put your content into divs for the page layout, which is why things are wrapping to the next line at the moment. Once you put things inside divs and set widths etc it won't do that any more. You'll probably find it looks a little better in DW then as well. Regards Jennie
  25. Hi Thanks for the reply. I'm converting to a DW template by saving the finished HTML file as a template and inserting the editable sections. That doesn't seem to be a problem, it's when I tried to implement the template into the original HTML file that I have problems because the file is already complete page so when I attach the template all the non editable regions get duplicated, and I have trouble getting rid of them as it keeps putting them back in when I save it. I'm probably just going about it the wrong way as I never read up on templates, I just did it in what seemed the obvious way. Thanks again Jennie
