Strange issue with IE6 and DIV tag

Featured Replies

Hi, just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this issue. I normally manage to resolve issues one way or another, and I have managed to arrive at a solution, but the solution to me is as puzzling as the problem.

The problem is only occurring in IE6. I am using nested divs for the layout, I think more than I usually would as there are a lot of borders within borders in the design, which is probably why I've run into this. In IE6 the #page div was ballooning out to fill the overall outerpage div and obscuring the background image which is designed to give a drop shadow border on the right of the page. I thought it to be a problem with CSS padding on some of the content and spent a good deal of time trying to resolve with CSS. Eventually I eliminated this as a possibility since removing all elements individually showed that none were causing the problem.

Almost by chance, simply because working in code view Dreamweaver seemed to want to add an extraneous closing div tag, I tried doing this and it fixed the problem in IE6 and worked OK in the other browsers I tried. However just to make sure I wasn't missing something, I validated the code and this threw up the end div tag as an error. The solution I have at the moment is I've added the extra closing div tag within an IE6 conditional comment, but I'm not very happy with the solution and wonder if I am missing something obvious.

I'm on the first page of the design stage only, and the page is located at:

The stylesheets are at

lake-districtselfcatering.co.uk/design/ldsc.css

lake-districtselfcatering.co.uk/design/navmenu.css

Hope that is enough info, I don't really post in forums much as I usually find someone else has asked the question.

If anyone can shed some light on this I'd be grateful as my brain might stop hurting.

Many thanks

Jennie

Hi all

I guess nothing jumping out at anyone on this. I have to move forward with it as I've had to turn the page into a template, but there is definitely something weirdly amiss with my divs. I always have a hard time converting pages into templates as I end up with two of of all the non editable parts which I end up manually stripping out over and over again as Dreamweaver stubbornly keeps putting them back in again when I save the changes! I only mention this as I've likely further compromised my divs in the process of trying to get rid of these sections, as Dreamweaver is now proudly waving an end div tag in my face as being wrong, but if I delete it it messes up the page.

I really hate the idea that I've had to fix something by putting something in I know is incorrect, but I guess I'll just have to see how it goes or redesign the page from scratch.

Thanks for looking

I read through the code last night I couldn't see anything a miss

How do you convert it to a template?

How do you convert it to a template?

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I'm converting to a DW template by saving the finished HTML file as a template and inserting the editable sections. That doesn't seem to be a problem, it's when I tried to implement the template into the original HTML file that I have problems because the file is already complete page so when I attach the template all the non editable regions get duplicated, and I have trouble getting rid of them as it keeps putting them back in when I save it. I'm probably just going about it the wrong way as I never read up on templates, I just did it in what seemed the obvious way.

Thanks again

Jennie
