  1. Yes, sorry, the content will go in the middle. And yes, I am very much winging it at the minute. The gaffer is changing his mind so often that I can't put much planning into it and am needing to stay really flexible. I know this is probably going to lead to me having lots of really silly beginner questions (as I have already had to ask plenty as a result of this way of working) so I'm sorry to put you all through this, but I do really appreciate all the help I have had so far
  2. Thanks Cibgraphics (and Lev, but I couldn't get yours to work.. ), Yeah I am planning to add content. To be honest just getting them side by side was as far as I thought ahead. I guess my answer would have been to mess about with padding and border, but thinking about it, things could get messy that way. What would you recommend?
  3. Hi again all. My boss has decided to change his mind about what the site should look like, meaning starting again from scratch (I couldn't adapt the original code). The new layout need three links down the left and three down the right. I have got a <div> with three links in one list and three in another. However no matter how hard I try I cannot get them to display inline. I have also tried using top and left positioning to shunt the righthand link along, but they just stay in block. Any Ideas on how to fix this? the new site is up at www.thegaragestudios.co.cc The layout should look something like this, with L1-6 being the link boxes and the ....'s being blank space: [L1]...................[L4] [L2]...................[L5] [L3]...................[L6] Much appreciated, Al
  4. Hi again, have been progressing very well with my website thanks to the excellent help of people in this forum, I have just encountered a bit of a glitch. I have repositioned my link bar to make room for a banner, but for some reason it is now showing the bottom border on the top. Any ideas how to correct this? Cheers, Al

Hya, I've been trying to get a marquee working for my site, and would like it to use an external file for the text that it scrolls. Currently nothing is showing up except for a little space where it should be that is only visible when I highlight the page by selecting edit>select all I have used the script avaliable here but instead of inserting the script into the body I have put it into an external .js my script is the same as theirs except I have made the links point to my documents instead of the samples they gave, however I will paste it here incase I have managed to delete one vital full stop or something. I'm guessing it's because I have incorrectly moved the code from inside the HTML to the external .js, but if someone could help me fix it that would be great. Cheers, Al

Hya, I have some social networking links set up on my site. The only one working t the moment is the myspace one as that is all my client has at the moment. However it has a red bounding box as it's a link. How do I remove this? cheers, Al

My apologies, I missed the pinned thread. I followed the instructions and it's now looking fine and validating too...

Thanks, I have used it elsewhere on the page though. It was only throwing up the error in the one instance, so I presumed align was allowed in some places and not others. I have tried adding your code to the next <DIV> to use align, and at first it didn't seem to be centering at all, but changing the 900px results in different alignment of the placeholder text. 900px was perfect for the original problem, and to keep things lined up it should be perfect for the placeholder as well, so why is it not centering? How do I then recreate the left and right align used for the two seperate boxes? Something like "Left: 0px; right: auto;"? Again sorry for bombarding the forum with really basic and stupid questions, I should be nearly finished and I don't really do much web design, so I'll be out or your hair soon

Heya, apologies for double posting, but I had already asked this question in an older thread I had started. I'm guessing it's got lost among the newer posts.. My website is now up and running more or less how I want it to, design wise. I need to add the content, but the template is there and ready to use, as soon as my client provides content My problem is this.. I have used a strict DOCTYPE and understandably it's kicking up a fuss with regards to my use of HTML align tags when I try to validate it. I have used align="center" to position the navbar and the template text, and have not been able to get the same effect in CSS. I have tried using "left: auto; right: auto;" in different places, but it's not having any affect. Am I putting this in the wrong place (in which case where should it go) or am I using the wrong code entirely? Cheers, Al
  11. Thanks everyone, I know I've probably been a pain, asking a load of really stupid questions so I really appreciate everyones responses. I started using DIV tags, and that solved a lot of my current problems, and even problems which I wasn't even going to attempt to tackle yet, so thanks for that Jennie.. I haven't put the "float" element in yet, but I will at some point to see if this makes the website behave more like how I'd like it to, however it's more or less how I want it at the moment, so I may not use this. One little problem though is that the site is no longer validating on W3C. It doesn't like my use of the align tag. I have used a strict doctype, as I know if I had used any other I would have just ended up getting frustrated and used tables in HTML. It seems obvious to me now that as align is a design element rather than content CSS is where it should be defined, but I'm a little gutted as it is behaving so perfectly by defining it in HTML, how can I achieve the same thing in CSS? Thanks again for your continued help, Alex
  12. Oops, forgot the link... www.thegaragestudios.co.cc I guess looking att the code will help you confirm this, but there's no chance of the site suddenly going garbled like it is in dreamweaver then?
  13. Hello, I have to apologise for my last postings, a great deal of the problems were due to invalid code, I had been working without an internet connection and so could only do so much to validate it. I have a couple of cosmetic problems with the website as it stands at the minute, but aside from that it's looking sorted for the navigation system. First, I have styled the navigation items using "border-bottom" tags to underline. There are gaps between the elements (presumably as it is applying a border to each item in the navigation bar individually and not the navigation as a whole) I would like this line to extend from left to right without any gaps. How do I achieve this? Second, the navigation looks more or less how I would like it to, and is rendering correctly in Safari and Firefox. It validates in both the HTML and CSS on W3C. However in Dreamweaver it is all garbled. The link bar is spread accross two lines, with the "Home" link next to the logo (after the padding) and the "Music Tuition" link on the next line. All other Navigation bar elements are bunched up on the right hand side of the page, spread accross two lines. I have included a screenshot. This isn't really a problem as long as it is showing up fine in the browser, but it is making it harder to see whats going on. I have a horrible sinking feeling that it's going to start rendering like this in the browser as well. Third, when resizing the browser window the link bar wraps onto the next line. Is there a way of stopping this, so that if the browser window is too small it makes the window scroll, rather than redesigning my website to fit? And finally, as the navigation is more or less dusted, I need to look at styling the content. I would like to have two columns underneath all the navigation, maybe one for images and one for information, or something similar. Is it positioning and layers that I need to look into? Thanks for your continued help, Alex

Ok, I'll have to get home and upload the site to the server.. I think the missing " and the html mispelling is just as I have copied out the text from one computer to another (by hand) I think it's correct on the actual website.. I'll post again once it's back online. Thanks, Al

Thanks, I had tried it with "p.navBar" instead of "li.navBar". I had thought the "p." told it to look for a class whichever tag it was inclosed in. Obviously by making it "li.navBar" it has told it the correct place to look, right? So what does the "p." mean? I have corrected that now but there is a gap beside both the "home" link and the "about" link. But none of the rest of the navigation items. By holding the mouse over the home link in dreamweaver I can see the padding that has just been added. This padding isn't present on the about link. I would guess therefore that the padding and navBar class (now called indent) is working correctly and it's something else thats wrong. My design computer is not connected to the internet (I am posting from the office computer) so I cannot upload the site for you to see but the HTML and CSS is as follows: HTML <ul id="mainNav"> <li><img src="Images/logo.png" alt="The Garage Studios" width="150" height="130" class=logoImg></li> <li class=indent"> <a href="index.thml">Home</a></li> <li><a href="about.html">About</a></li> ... ... </ul></p> CSS ul#mainNav li { display: inline; list-style: none; position: relative; top: 10px; left:10px; } li.indent { margin-left: 40px; } The logoImg class mentioned in the HTML section is commented out at the minute as I am not using it right now. And the logo will be resized in Photoshop, it's just subject to change so in the meantime I will keep the HTML resize and update it with the correct size version once it's finalized..
