  1. Hi I would appreciate some expert advice from a SEO point of view. I'm currently designing a new product, the new business hasn't got a name yet, any addvice when naming a new website would be great? I do have a possible 3 word business name, is it better to have the 3 words all together or separated by dashes for SEO? www.firstsecondthird.co.uk or www.first-second-third.co.uk? Second question- i intend to be making the first batch of new products early next year, is it a good idea after deciding on the name to produce a one page website out on the internet saying coming soon etc, would this help SEO when it comes to producing a full site? Many Thanks

  4. The copy won't be there long, it's getting a bit confusing with it running in the background. So far i've: Made sure the site validates Used title tags properly? Used meta tags for description and keywords Used heading tags correctly? I've submitted the site to a few directories, i also need a sitemap. What next?
  5. Thanks charliesaidthat Our company is in the Trailer manufacturing industry producing trailers for golf courses, parks, etc The biggest player in our field is http://www.iwt.co.uk(ifor williams), they generally come top of google when searching for the keyword "trailers" etc. I would love to some day get above this company in SERPs but i will struggle to write articles, blogs other PR related stuff for our product range. I have only just started with SEO and will persist in my quest and with the help on this forum, 1'll hopefully get there. Any other advise would be much appreciated! 7. Hi I'm currently in the final stages of my first website, now wanting to concentrate on SEO but also know SEO should of been part of my design, can anyone recommend any SEO software, free or paid? Is Internet Business Promoter (IBP) any good? Or is this board all about doing the SEO for yourself and paid software frowned upon? sorry for my ignorance! cheers
  8. Hi I've been recommended the jQuery lightbox plugin by Leandro Vieira Pinho, it all seems quite straight forward until i try organising the files. With every file on the same level the lightbox works great, when i start to put my html files in a folder i obviously have to start changing levels to still get the lightbox to work using ../ etc. When organised how i would want i can get the lightbox to work by changing the paths of the jquery.lightbox-0.5.css, js/jquery.js, js/jquery.lightbox-0.5.js files but without showing the icons to close/next/previous to show. There is a image folder with these pictures in but i can't see where or which file references the image folder so i can change the levels to find these pictures?
  9. Hi I would like to add what i think is called a javascript lightbox effect on a photo gallery. Could you guys please suggest/recommend where to find this and any tips on implementing as i have no experience of javascript yet! Thanks
  10. Thanks HogIT I'll give it a go.
  11. Hi Guys I want create an image of the content inside 4 pdf files which are leaflets to act as links to the full pdf file. How do i make a pdf file/screen shot into an image i can use as a link? Thanks
  12. Now had chance to play around and as mteam said i still can't have an h3 inside the <a> as it is exactly the same problem as before - block element inside an inline element. Was hoping to still use the h3 as it's a product category section on the homepage so quite important. I have now 4 equally sized <a> tags changed to display block and floated left with pictures of product categories inside. I just need to be able to label each category with the h3 tag which is easy inside the <a> but harder to position if outside the <a> as Gareth has suggested.
  13. Great fast help, thanks guys.
  14. Hi, this is probably very easy but i'm not thinking straight this morning. I have a <div> tag with a border and contained inside is a <h3> tag and a <img> /picture, i have put <a> before and after the <div> to make the whole <div> into a clickable link. Also added a:hover to change the color of the <div> border when hovering. Validation can't happen though as you can't have a block level element inside an inline element. What do i need to do to make the whole div clickable and still be able to validate? Thanks
  15. Thanks empek + Wickham!
  16. Hi Just putting the finishing touches to my first website. I have a javascript fade slide show on the main homepage picture, also have a javascript drop down menu navigation. The drop down menu disappears beneath the main picture, do i have to change the properties of the picture or the drop down nav in some way to make it appear on top of the picture? Thanks for your help.

    Thanks mteam, good thinking, nearly there! The paragaph does now stay in nearly the correct place but for some reason the left hand side of the paragraph is hidden under the picture?

    Mteam, here is a simplified version of the code: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /> <title>Homepage</title> <style type="text/css"> html, body, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, p, ol, ul, li, pre, code, address, variable, form, fieldset, blockquote { padding: 0; margin: 0; font-size: 100%; font-weight: normal; } table { border-collapse: collapse; border-spacing: 0; } td, th, caption { font-weight: normal; text-align: left; } img, fieldset { border: 0; } ol { padding-left: 1.4em; list-style: decimal; } ul { padding-left: 1.4em; list-style:square; } q:before, q:after { content:''; } html { background-color: black; font-family: Calibri; background-image:url(gradientfill.png); background-repeat: repeat-x; background-color: #FFF; } .wrapper { margin: 0 auto; width: 950px; background-color: #303030; color: white; } .mainphoto { float: left; margin: 10px 30px 0px 15px; padding: 5px; } .intro { margin: 25px; } #gallery { width: 500px; height: 328px; } #gallery img { width: 500px; height: 328px; } </style> <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.js"> </script> <script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.cycle.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('#gallery').cycle({ fx: 'fade', timeout: 6000, speed: 500, delay: -2000, pager: '#pager', next: '#next', prev: '#prev' }); $('#playControl').toggle( function() { $('#gallery').cycle('pause'); $(this).text('Play'); }, function() { $('#gallery').cycle('resume'); $(this).text('Pause'); }); }); // end ready() </script> </head> <body> <div class="wrapper"> <img src="banner.gif" class="image2"/> <div id="gallery"> <img src="trailer.jpg" alt="trailer" width="500" height="328" class="mainphoto"> <img src="home.jpg" alt="home" width="500" height="328" class="mainphoto"> </div> <p class="intro"> Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, Paragraph Here, </p> </div> </body> </html>

    Thanks IanC I am running it locally off my hard drive, hope this is the problem! Another question: my homepage main picture is floated to the left so a div containing a paragraph of text can float next to the picture. When i introduce the javascript slideshow fade this paragraph of text falls down below the picture and on top of of other content, any idea why it doesn't stay in place? Thanks

    Hi I'm currently trying to complete my first website and have tried to include some javascript to make a slide show fade for the homepage main picture. Also have a lightbox photo gallery but problems i'm having are that IE8 each time resticts the page and says: "to help protect security, IE has restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls, click for options". Firefox has no problems, IE causes all the preloaded pictures of the slide show to appear until i give IE permission to allow blocked content. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
