Hey guys. I'm new here, and just wanted to post a little about myself. I'm 17, I am studying psychology, sociology and business at college. I have always been interested in computing, and I've ran a website before (forum). I started off in the web a few years ago when I started joining online forums, and was quickly promoted to a moderator in a forum. I moderated that forum for a while, and eventually made my own forum, but due to financial difficulties, I decided to not to renew the site. I've recently started to study HTML and CSS. I get some of the basics, but I'm struggling to advance my understanding to the intermediate stuff.. I guess I'll get there eventually. Anyhow guys, I won't bore you with my life story any more... I just wanted to say, hi!

Ok, thank you. What it is, I'm still at the basic stages learning and I'm not sure what I want to get into - development, programming or design. Could you outline what each job (yes, I want to persue a career in this) each do, the languages and programs needed and how much the average salary is? Plus, is there a free service I could do this with efficiently or would I need to pay for web hosting? I'm going to be wanting to open a site in the future - but I'm not sure what I want it to be based on yet, so I don't want to be starting that yet, plus I'm not financially stable at the moment as I'm still a student.

So if I want to get into web designing I should host a website and practice with that?

Just seen this part of the forum! I guess this is where my inquiries should go I'm currently studying HTML and CSS (at home). I've been reading w3schools and some other sites and creating a few web pages with simple CSS and HTML. I've just a few questions for those of you who are specalists in CSS and HTML, and a few general questions about jobs within the web: Is it a problem if I just study this on my own when I come to persue a career? Will having no formal classes / qualifications disallow me to do certain pieces of work? I feel like I'm not getting no where.. Going other the same things over and over.. is it normal to feel like that? Whats the best way to get a better understanding of HTML and CSS? Go through the beginners stuff a few times THEN move onto intermediate and then the more advanced? I feel I have an understand of beginners and intermediate things, but the more advanced seems a little too complex at the minute (especially CSS).. How long should I spend on each section? If I was to persue a career in web development? And what areas is there within the web and what do the jobs require me to do? And the last one, how many hours of studying will it take for me to be able to use CSS and HTML to create three-column sites with headings, etc? Thanks guys!

Hello guys. I'm new here, and I'm pretty new to web design. I first started off with online forums and moderating forums, which made me want to run an online forum and get into a bit of webdesign. I made my own site and went through several ideas, but ended up with a forum, which I ran with IPB. I ran a forum which consisted over 6000 members and was doing well, but sadly, I decided to end it after the year passed, I decided I could not keep it due to financial problems (I was young, still a student) and my lack of coding knowledge. I gave up on web design for the minute, but recently I've been studying a bit of HTML and CSS. I'm just wondering if you could help me for and clear up a few questions on if I were going to get into the a profession in the web: Is working in the web competitve? What is the average salary? How often is work when you go freelance? Is it a frequent? Is going to college and getting qualifications in the field needed or does it make no difference? Where do you get most of your work? How many hours do you work a day? How long does a project take to complete for the amount of money you get (basically how much do you get on average per hour)? My main concerns though are what are the main things I want to concentrate on. Could someone clear up on specifically what people do within the web and what the jobs include? A web designer I assume these use programs such as Photoshop CS3 to design websites which can then be coded? If so, would these people also have use for web languages such as HTML and CSS (and therefore could design AND code his websites?), or is this best left for the web developer? Would these also be the people who also made dynamic webpages with Flash? What web languages would you need to study? A web developer What I'm guessing is these are the people that code websites into their HTML and CSS form? Would a web developer also use PHP/MYSQL (programming languages?) to create things within forums, etc. What sorts of things can you create if you are a web developer? What web languages would you need to study? What programs would you need to be fimilar with? Would you also design websites within photoshop or isn't this part of your job? If it's not NEEDED, could it benefit for you to be able to also design websites? A web programmer Is this the person who uses things like Javascript to create browser-based software? I've just started learning HTML, and can do REALLY basic web pages at the moment (bland colors, horrid positioning). I just have a few questions: What's the best way to learn how to create better, more professional-looking (and working) pages? How long will it take to me to learn how to create a decent webpage? What programs should I download to be able to learn how to make websites? And is it a skill worth learning? Oh, and I thought I should say I'd be wanting to learn to work as a freelance web designer (and possibly run my own site), is there money in it, and what's the competition like?
