I love sprites, there the future. When the true power of sprites is realised. That being , you only have to edit an illustrator file the way you want it , save for web, load it up, change the replacement image text, forget about markup tottally , just use illustrator and spite the whole site visually. Basically edit the image file , save it, load it, job done. Graphically far superior than html text also, wouldnt you like to design you webpage in photoshop and then load it straight up, think of the endless visual styles you could then have, without html or browser issues tying the designers hands behind his back. Mark up would then be just descriptions for search engines and accessibilty, no hassle, adobe would probably make illustrator and photoshop write this for you, and output it, like is does with HTML now. Obviously theres the video, forms and things that require input , which will still be coded , but visuals could all be just graphic designed and loaded straight into a box. YOUR THOUGHTS PEOPLE.

Its the XHTML and the CSS, things like naming , code cleanlyness , tags that shouldnt be used where there used, basically look at it as someones first attempt at optimising a page, who's just moved over from html tables and 1x1 gifs to XHTML Strict and CSS layouts. The client wanted a page thats friendlier to the search engines and faster to download. The origional page is here http://ewto.at/wingtsun , which is what I got to work with. Gifs the way to go, line drawings are allways smaller gifs than jpg's , photographs are better jpg's , am I teaching grandmother how to suck eggs here?

I have learnt a bit about xml and why its used. What I want to khow is how often is it used and how entrenched in web design work is it these days? Should all data be recorded as xml now ? Should a web design start with an XML list so to speak with all the elements recorded waiting to be placed. It seems to make sense, but how much does one need to know and use?

Very good point, about accesability, cheers for the replys, sound like you know what your on about. What should I do now to get my skills more current, I am thinking I need to know css in depth now for a start, what else XML? allthough I am well into flash 3d using c4d and flash?

What I'm saying is if only 1 in 5000 websites is netscape 4.7 compatable then netscape user/netscape friendly website ratio is the same as that of moden browser user/total nuber of websites, meaning the hit ratio from netscape is theoretically be the same number as that from the rest of the web and so doubling the viewing users by having a netscape 4.7 compatable site, I know the user would be having to trawl through the 5000 to get to your site by which time he would probably downloaded a copy of firefox anyway, but its something to consider before just talking about percentages as if they mean anything on there own. When 340,000 users can only see yours and few other sites your hit rate chances are vastly increased. Its still probably not worth it, but not a subject you can just throw away with, oh! only 0.002% of the market use netscape, not a good enough answer. The debate continues! I wonder how much money those 340,000 users spend everyday online, I bet if your customers knew that they may not be taken in by the "dont bother about netscape only 0.02% of the people online use it, have some changing background colours instead!".

I would have made the whole silver gradient and balls thing a bit smaller, so your name fills it out a bit more. I would also put the site map at the top as some people dont scroll down and you really want everyone to have access to that link. But hey what do I know! It looks fine though. I may have tried to use the balls in the graphic on the left as icons for each site section each one next to the nav text, that tint slightly on rollover or something subtle. Its only my opinion, but its better than , "yeh its great mate", at least its something to mull over!

so your saying for layout consistancy go for the similar style of html as was netscape 4.7 or nearly that.

also the 340000 using netscape4.7 will only be able to view few sites that actually work, yours will be one of them if its designed properly, so there would be less competition to stand out against, so being infront of 340000, people who can only see a small selection of sites clearly could be better than being infront of millions with more of your competition sites to choose from. Its all theory I know. I challenge someone to come up with the figures for: number of sites netscape friendly / no. of netscape users then tottal number of sites avalaible to all but 0.02% of the market / total numebr of users - 0.02% oh god i,m getting boring now.
