Who still designs with netscape 4.7 in mind?

Featured Replies

Am I alone in still designing for netscape 4.7 as a main testing browser? People online seems to be saying its only 2% who cares, but surley if it works in netscape it works in everything else-ish. Also the rules for Netscape demands your code is clean and also your layout is fixed and your design maintains its form and layout so your clients money spent on the designing isnt in the hands of the users browser. Do I need to retrain my brain and get with the times man! or stick to my old ways which work. I do , do singing and dancing in a big way using FLASH and Cinema 4D , Swift 3d. Also when you cant make a site design good by making the menu do a summersalt you have to make simple good designs which are far more effective at times and be more creative with the graphics. I AM COMPLETELY OPEN MINDED ABOUT ALL THIS SO SAY WHATEVER YOU THINK PLEASE.

Netscape as a company closed it's doors a year or so ago, and the last version of Netscape browser was 6 - not that many people used it back then because IE5/6 had 95% of browser share anyway!

There are some odd souls still using it but that's a very small amount of people in the grand scheme of things. If you want to cater for these 26 people that's really a personal/business decision, but unless you have a specific reason I'd always argue in favour of designing for the latest browser first then making things backward compatible as fas as possible/required.

You have several standards compliant modern browsers to work with - Opera, Safari and Firefox.

I think it's time to retrain yer brain ;)

Is it not better to think more in rendering engines than browsers? Netscape helped develop and thus used the Gecko Engine, whilst netscape is gone (and pretty much in it's very last wheezes of life) the legacy remains. Firefox, one of the major browsers uses the gecko engine.

so your saying for layout consistancy go for the similar style of html as was netscape 4.7 or nearly that.
