I love sprites, there the future. When the true power of sprites is realised. That being , you only have to edit an illustrator file the way you want it , save for web, load it up, change the replacement image text, forget about markup tottally , just use illustrator and spite the whole site visually. Basically edit the image file , save it, load it, job done. Graphically far superior than html text also, wouldnt you like to design you webpage in photoshop and then load it straight up, think of the endless visual styles you could then have, without html or browser issues tying the designers hands behind his back. Mark up would then be just descriptions for search engines and accessibilty, no hassle, adobe would probably make illustrator and photoshop write this for you, and output it, like is does with HTML now. Obviously theres the video, forms and things that require input , which will still be coded , but visuals could all be just graphic designed and loaded straight into a box. YOUR THOUGHTS PEOPLE.

I don't even know what 'sprites' are, as I assume you're not talking about CSS sprites, but it seems stupid. You're ignoring all sorts of issues, and what does "Graphically far superior than html text" even mean?

 

Also, I guarantee I can code a site better (ie. better looking and performing and more accessible etc.) than anything any program would automatically output.

When was the idea of css sprites first used? I know i first started using them when i was about 13, i remember learning about them a few weeks prior to ALA publishing an article about them. So that would be around late 03 to early 04. Six years on is what i'd class as the future, and they're still a big part of the web But everything in moderation.

 

So in answer to your question, i'd have to say: they're past, present, and most certainly remain a part of the future.
