  1. I am currently employed full-time, but I have the opportunity to do work outside of work hours on a freelance basis, how would paying tax work? Would I have to register as self-employed? Would my employer have to know?
  2. I am looking to work on a hobby project in my spare time, but I am devoid of all ideas so I thought I would throw it open to suggestions from you lovely people on WDF. I wanting to work closely with PHP, jquery and HTML5, my thoughts are with a project management tool or a CRM, but they do not seem very fun to build.
  3. Hello there, I am working on a project at the moment that requires some seriously skinned up select menus, I have managed to re-skin them but using this plugin however I have no way of determining what item has been selected from what select box as the plugin builds the same HTML every time it meets a select element in my HTML. I need some way of adding a unique identifier onto the end of a class, by manipulating the below plugin. $.fn.customSelect = function() { // define defaults and override with options, if available // by extending the default settings, we don't modify the argument return this.each(function() { obj = $(this); obj.after("<div class=\"selectoptions\"> </div>"); obj.find('option').each(function(){ $(".selectoptions").append("<div id=\"" + $(this).attr("value") + "\" class=\"selectitems\"><span>" + $(this).html() + "</span></div>"); }); obj.before("<input type=\"hidden\" value =\"\" name=\"" + this.name + "\" class=\"customselect\"/><div class=\"iconselect\">" + this.title + "</div><div class=\"iconselectholder\"> </div>") .remove(); $('.iconselectholder').hide(); $(".iconselect").click(function(){ $(".iconselectholder").toggle("slow");}); $(".iconselectholder").append( $(".selectoptions")[0] ); $(".selectitems").mouseover(function(){ $(this).addClass("hoverclass"); }); $(".selectitems").mouseout(function(){ $(this).removeClass("hoverclass"); }); $(".selectitems").click(function(){ $(".selectedclass").removeClass("selectedclass"); $(this).addClass("selectedclass"); var thisselection = $(this).html(); $(".customselect").val(this.id); $(".iconselect").html(thisselection); $(".iconselectholder").toggle("slow") }); }); // do the rest of the plugin, using url and settings }

  5. Hi Paul, Welcome WDF, I too am from Huddersfield!!!
  6. Hello, I have a website that is going to be a one page website, essentially the user can come to the website and build a menu that allows to view the content they want to see, so for example they click on a link for the blog and a blog panel is loaded on there screen, click on that panel(which is an accordion) and they can see all the blog titles, click the blog link again the blog gets removed from their screen, my problem is, that if the user say clicks on blog and then another link, only first link creates a panel that is an accordion (i need each panel that is created to be an accordion), the second problem is that if they remove a panel and then add it again it is not loaded as an accordion could some tell if there is some thing wrong with my javascript that is doing this, and suggest a way that I could fix it please? $(document).ready(function() { //accordians for when the AJAX loads the content // hides the main_menu as soon as the DOM is ready // (a little sooner than page load) $('#main_menu').hide(); // shows the slickbox on clicking the noted link $('h3#show-menu a').click(function() { $('#main_menu').toggle('slow'); return false; }); //try and hide the left content when it is null $("#left-content:empty").hide(); //style up the scroll bar $('#left-content').jScrollPane(); //do some AJAX to call the method instead of the browser $("a.navlink").click(function (ev) { $(this).toggleClass("active"); ev.preventDefault(); var id = $(this).attr("id") if ($(this).hasClass("active")) { $("."+id).remove(); } else { //$(this).toggleClass("active"); var url = $(this).attr("href"); $.ajax ({ url: url, type: "POST", success : function (html) { $("#accordion").append(html).accordion({active:false, header:'h2', collapsible:true}); // $('#accordion').accordion({active:false, header:'h2', collapsible:true}); //alert(accordion()) } }); } }); });
  7. I don't follow, if you have a table with subscribed users in already then why can you not just use that or atleast use the ID as foreign key and create another table 'blog_subscribers' and have something like ID | Subscribed 1 1 2 0 3 1 4 0 5 0 where one is signed up and 0 is not signed up. Then it just the case of writing some SQL with a join? Or have I missed the point entirely?
  8. Hello, I am working on a one page website that allows the users to add and remove pages from there navigation as and when they would like too, the way it works is that if the click 'Blog' on the main nav a 'Blog' section should appear on the page, if they then click 'News' the 'News' section should also be visible, however the way I have started to implement this it seems I can only have one section at a time, can my code be adpated to allow multiple sections to shown on the main page. Here is my code for the page that has the main menu and the users selections on it. <!DOCTYPE html> <head> <title>Development Site</title> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/media/css/reset.css" media="screen"/> <link rel="stylesheet" href="/media/css/generic.css" media="screen"/> <script type="text/javascript" src="/media/javascript/jquery-ui/js/jquery.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/media/javascript/jquery-ui/development-bundle/ui/ui.core.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/media/javascript/jquery-ui/development-bundle/ui/ui.accordion.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $('a.menuitem').click(function() { var link = $(this), url = link.attr("href"); $("#content_pane").load(url); return false; // prevent default link-behavior }); }); </script> </head> <body> <li><a class="menuitem" href="inspiration">Inspiration</a></li> <li><a class="menuitem" href="blog">Blog</a></li> <div id="content_pane"> </div> </body> </html>
  9. I don't have IE6 on this machine so I can't comment on what I am seeing, however there are a view things I have picked up on in your code. ul#linksp li a {background-image:url(images/linksprite.png); background-position:0px 0px; margin:auto; width:940px; height:37px; display:inline; float:left; text-indent:-9999px;} You dont need to have float left here as it inherits float left from the parent li. Sometime IE6 can also have an aversion to negative numbers. trying giving it a right position instead. or give the elements parent position:relative and then the child position:absolute that should also solve your IE issue
  10. Hi everyone, I was thinking to myself today that I dont really use the technology that is available to me well enough, I am keen advocate that if you need to learn something the best way is to sit at a computer with a book and work through the topic. It struck me that maybe I should get into podcasts and blogs a bit more, this is where I am hoping for somehelp, list you favourite, blogs, podcasts, screencasts, and books. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :-) Thanks s87a
  11. Hi Reaper, I am based in West Yorkshire, near Leeds, currently I am working on my personal portfolio, all I have at the moment are sites I have contributed to through my work at an agency, these are things like wagamama.com, futuremoney.com, danddlondon.com. In terms of pricelist, I am trying to build a portfolio so I come cheap anywhere from £8 to £15 dependent on the project. s87a

    I personally would be careful with honeypot, reverse captcha is a bit hit or miss in my opinion, you would be better, getting the user to do some maths, or implimenting full capture validation.... Anyway that is my thoughts, want any help give me a message s87a
  13. Hi Folks, I'm new to the board so I thought I would introduce myself properly. I am a 22 year old web developer from england who is a year out uni, I specialise in PHP and mySQL, but can also work with Javascript, AJAX, Silverlight, and the obvious tecnologies of CSS and xHTML. At the moment I am also learning Python (with the Django framework). As you have probably guessed I am not much of a designer, I can find my way around most of the mainstream iamge editing packages but the lack the creativity to do anything mind-blowing, and that is reason I have joined, to gather expertise from other designers and developers and give a wider skill set that branches of into design as well. I am also looking to freelance on the side of my current development job so will probably be looking for advice on how to get started sometime in the near future. Away from the computer I am sport nut, you name it I have probably tried to play it. Any way thats me, pleased to meet you s87a
