  3. I can't use Sessions as it's going to be user content entered via the CMS which will be pulled, "labels" of text if you like so users can, for example, change there form labels without having to worry about affecting any of the form code. So if I have 10 form labels, each read from a database, it's essentially 10 db requests. This is just an example, it can be used for other things such as snippets of text on dynamically generated pages that the client would otherwise not have access to change.
  4. Just need your opinions guys, I'm in the process of implementing a new feature to my CMS which will effectively require a database request everytime a page with the feature is present, is loaded. I was just wondering if anyone knew any way to avoid accessing the database everytime - perhaps a method of caching? It doesn't seem like much, but say 100 users hit my page, that's alot of additional database requests that I would like to avoid if possible. Thanks in advance!
  5. Really like it, good job - how did you find Magento to work with? I've been reading up on it alot and thinking of using it for future e-commerce work.

Not sure that any tabs plugin has that functionality built in, but you could just load the content via Ajax when the tab is clicked?

  14. I initially tried to be a jack of all trades, logo design, web design, back end development. Recently, I've realized my true skill & ability lies in development so I try to avoid any design work if I can.

  17. I strongly believe that executing PHP/MySQL in projects will help you most to become a better developer. You can get the basics anywhere, such as Tizag.com or even the W3CSchools, however, unless you are practicing what you learn on projects, you will only know the basics. When developing projects, you run into problems which you have to fix yourself, you will build up a library of your own code that you can take from project to project and you will know what works best for you. The more you use these technologies, the better you will become (+1 for Sherlock here!). For your own projects, your right, a basic understanding is all you need and you can "take it from there". The problem that comes with putting PHP under your skills for a job without having a great understanding of it, is that if you get that job, you will almost certainly be working with others people code that has been coded years ago. The code can be outdated, terrible, based on a framework or just confusing, and that's where experience is essential. You need to be able to understand it and trace it back through functions files and includes etc. Even trying to assist people on the forum helps.. if you can solve someone elses problems, it's a little confidence boost in my opinion Hope that helps some!

  19. Hi guys, CSScaffold is a CSS framework by a developer named Anthony Short (http://anthonyshort.com.au/scaffold/'>http://anthonyshort.com.au/scaffold/). I've been using it for a couple weeks and now and I must say I am completely hooked. It really increases your CSS productivity by allowing for things such as mixins (functions for CSS), nested CSS, constants and much more. You can even perform iterations and calculations! An example of nested css would be as follows: div#about_us_wrap { margin-top: 20px; border-top: 1px solid #bdbdbd; div#about_us_text { float: left; width: 500px; padding: 12px; background: #f1f1f1; p { font-size: 11px; line-height: 15px; color: #2b2b2b; } p.header { font-size: 16px; margin: 20px 0; } } } It's just so logical looking and it's fantastic. The mixins are equally impressive - here's one I use alot for setting opacity across all the browsers: The function - placed inside the CSS file anywhere. So opac is the name of the function (don't call it opacity else it won't work, must be a conflict with the css property and !opacity is the variable we pass into it. =opac(!opacity) { opacity: .!opacity; filter: alpha(opacity=!opacity); -ms-filter: "alpha(opacity=!opacity)"; -khtml-opacity: .!opacity; -moz-opacity: .!opacity; } Usage - h1.tour_title { +opac(84); } So now, instead of having to write 5 different lines for crossbrowser opacity, I simply call the opac function and pass in the desired opacity... and that's only one use, the possibilities are endless! There are even built in mixins such as clearfixing etc. Another useful feature is the include statement... so I only have one stylesheet referenced in my HTML, and in that style sheet, I have this: @include 'reset.css'; @include 'typography.css'; It's extremely simple to install... and get this, upon compiling your CSS, it even compresses it for you, making your CSS files more lightweight. These are just a couple examples from a project I'm working on now, but you can see by them the time it can potentially save. The full documentation is here - http://anthonyshort.com.au/scaffold/ GitHub - http://github.com/anthonyshort/csscaffold Some videos- Hopefully you guys find this useful
