hey, Im an aspiring freelance videographer

Featured Replies

How are you doing guys.

Im an upcoming freelance videographer from germany and right now, I'm spending a lot of time investing in myself.

I have my all needed gear and already shoot and publish a little documentary.

My goal is to build up a brand and really step into the market.

A name, a website and a demo video are in the pipeline and are almost ready.

Therefore I am not a professional designer as most of you likely are. But as I am building up this website, I was hoping to ask for some advice, how to improve and reach out some guidance.

Thanks for taking your time, and all the best to you!!

cheers.

You don't need a brand. Start creating videos and publish on youtube. Get out on the street and talk to local businesses and organisations and offer your service.

The website can come later. Use Social Media to show people the films you have made.

Hey guys,

Sorry for the late reply, I just came home from a long hike.

Thanks for your kind words!

@Jogeta316

I'm going fullframe. Thats what I enjoy most.

My Setup is a Lumix S5M2, the lens is Sigma 24-70 2.8.

For me Panasonic has the best price to value ratio, where the L mount has indeed only few options compared to Canon, Sony.. But as long high profiling companys like Sigma are delivering, I am satisfied.

And, because you asked about the link. Its mediacolonia.rf.gd (still weird TLD, because I'm using a free hoster right now, I will move as quick as possible as the project is ready)

But thats for short. I hope to ask in a dedicated forum for a more detailed QA.

@fisicx

Okay, thats one way, but I choose another. To make a Video is quite a heavy load amount of work.

Its not like I have time to make 3-4 Videos for free in a month.

I just work on my Demoreel, and thats my way to show off my skills. And I think a website, kind of a business card is in my opinion a good way to make yourself known.

But yes its true, Social media is another thing. I never had Instagram, and now for the first time registered an account (I know, I feel old...). But the Account is still empty, because my Logo is so ****ty and my Idea was to launch everything at once.

But last but not least. I have to learn it, one or the other way ^^

Find the time.

If there is a music show in the park offer your services for free. Make a really good video and promote it everywhere - including tic tok. I know a videographer in the UK who got a contract with a TV station because of his work on tik tok.

That is for sure an inspiring story, and Its not like I have no content created before. But I cant do everything all at once. I just want the whole thing grow one bye one. First the website including my demoreel I can recommend to others. Than a Instagram Account where I can upload little shorts of, yes, nearby open air concerts etc.. But I just really want to finish this website. I cant start one, two projects, dont finalize them and then start the next one. thats for sure a way to go crazy. ;-)

OK. But as I said in your other thread, your skill is making videos not building a website. Get help.

But you need to decide on your marketing plan before building a website. It maybe that you don't even need a website. You could easily get loads of work through SM.

Consider also a Google Business Profile. It's free and how many people and businesses find local services.

Exactly what I am doing right now. I am asking for help. But in case you mean to pay off someone. Thats just not possible for now. I really appreciate all your recommendations. But you do suggest more and more. Maybe a google business profile in the future. Maybe Tiktok.

Do I have a marketing plan? No. I am not a marketing guy. Yet. But I am willing to learn all these steps. But allow me to go through these in a reasonable amount of time. I am not here for a full business plan. I am here to finalize this website.

Awesome!

I used a Lumix S5 with the S 50mm f1.8 for my last paid gig and it was brilliant!

Took me a while to get used to the autofocus settings - and it really didn't do a great job when it came to video - but the stills were incredible!

The control layout and ergonomics were really good as well. The only other body that's come close in comfort is Fujifilm XS20, which I'm pretty sure was made for my hands 😂

Yeah the S5 was sadly released without PDAF. S5M2 fixed that and its nearly 99% close to Sony. But still the color profile of S5 is flawless!! I would consider it as a b-cam, if there won't be any 30min limits.

Which is why you need help.

Have you identified your potential client? Don't say everyone and anyone, that's far too wide a group. The narrower and more niche the group the easier it will be to target your marketing.

How do you plan to market your services? You need to be visible on the channels your target client uses. This means doing some research.

Marketing is more important than your website, your video skills, your personality and everything else. Good marketing will get you business. Poor marketing will mean no work for you.

Why did you buy a Lumix? It wasn't because they are the best, it was because of marketing. Their marketing convinced you it was the best camera for you. Without marketing you wouldn't even know Lumix made this particular model.

Why not now?

It's free and will take you less than an hour to set up.

My son lives in Cottbus. A search for local videographers gives me this:

https://www.google.com/search?q=videographer+cottbus

You could do the same for your location.

I hope you dont get the feeling that I didnt spend any thoughts about this all.

I do! A lot! As I wrote, i know my audience, and right now I focus adressing them.

My go to plan is:

- Website with a first insight.

- Active Instagram account with multiple frequent shorts (Need a good Logo for that first.)

- Than emailing/ calling through all the small companies and introduce myself/website

- connect to other film makers around me (just agree on a meetup with a guy I connected on reddit! this week)

- grow by time and hopefully get more attention with more content arising.

- earn money, invest in better equipment, make better content

> better shorts on instagram

> success :D

Instagram before the website. You don't need a logo.

Put your shorts on Tic Tok

Don't bother with emails/calling. If they want a video they will do their own research and contact you if they like what they see. Very few local businesses will want a video.

But bands and musicians might be interested. Get to all the local gigs and start filming. Become known locally as the gig film expert. This is what I meant about finding a niche.
