This probably has a really simple answer but heck, I'll ask anyway, otherwise I'll never learn.

 

I'm creating a WordPress theme for my websites design. I'm ok with all the design stuff but WordPress itself is confusing me. What I want to do is have a homepage, portfolio page, and some others, I'll use http://mattbrett.com/ this site as an example.

 

What confuses me is that when you post a Page in wordpress (I'm assuming this is how the seperate pages are designed, I really don't know which is something else I'd like to know) It creates a link for you, rather than /portfolio or /contact ect.

 

Other questions that may sound stupid but I need to ask them anyway.

Do you put index files in each directory to achieve different looks?

Do you add your own menu's in for navigation?

Do you post Pages using WordPress and manage content the same way?

 

I just need to know how the seperate pages are created and how they're linked together (if not by using the WordPress page category).

Wordpress uses templates, and there's one templates that's normally used for "pages" - I think it's called page.php and you can access it from your admin. You modify that template to your needs then all "pages" you create will use that template.

But doesn't any page you post using the page template still make its own unique link? for example on my website at the moment http://angelssin.co.uk//blog/?page_id=11 is my homepage. I'd much rather it be linked and placed into my websites root directory and the same goes for any portfolio, contact etc. pages that I may want to add later on.

 

I'm starting to think that I have to design my own pages within their own directory with their own templates but I can't help but think that this is the long way around for something that could be so much easier. Also, the method I just mentioned in theory sounds like it would be really hard to manage the content without having to dive into the html and php.

 

I know one of the guys on this forum created his site using WordPress (Rob, I think it is) and his site works pretty much exact to what I'm trying to achieve with the way I want my pages to link up. http://rawkes.com/ is the address. As you can see from the links, you don't get any ?page= stuff at the end or anything like that which leads me to believe that each section of his site has its own directory. What I'd like to know is what files I need to put into those directories (If I'm right about the directory thing in the first place that is).

 

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but like I said before, life is study and I don't like to give up until it's clear otherwise nothing is gained.

I'm fairly busy right now but I'll take some time out to give you some tips.

 

1. The first thing you need to do is set up permalinks on your blog as these will give you those "clean urls" to pages in WP, like http://rawkes.com/portfolio

2. This post on WPCandy is helpful as it shows how you can have one page "template" to save you create separate template files for every single page of your blog.
