In the dark!

As this is my first post, HI ALL! (sorry it’s a long one)

A bit of background for you – I was ICT tutor for a local school/adult education centre where I taught kids and adults (among other things) web design. (I chose the route of tutor as I didn’t want go down the road of working for a corporate company or fighting for freelance work.) In a nut-shell I worked for the institution for 3 years before moving to Italy to set up an unrelated business.

On a recent trip back to dear ole Blighty I met the director the institution who asked if I could “see to their web site” as it is seriously out of date. Their web developer left over a year and half ago and nothing has been done to their site since. On my last visit to the site it had 8 visitors on line 190 hits that day and 1142 during the week.

He can not employ anyone on a permanent contract due to the local authority restrictions and this is likely to continue until next April at the earliest! But is able to pay me for any freelance work I do.

By my reckoning 50% of the site would need updating (it has 52 pages) if I keep to the original design, OR I start from scratch with a complete redesign. Although I would like to do a redesign, it is a well designed and user-friendly site! (not saying I couldn’t match it but, I like it!) If I play it canny, I could be updating the site on a weekly/monthly basis!!

The institution will be having their annual summer break meeting next week to discuss their summer break agenda and among other things, what will be needed to be done on the web site. I have been sent an email saying he will let me know what precisely needs doing on the site so I can give them a quote.

So here is the question – How much should I charge for the following?

To update 50% of the site!

Or a new redesigned site!

Also should I charge per site, per page or per hour?

And if I manage swing the part of weekly/monthly updates what is the going rate?

I know you guys like to keep the discussion of charges close to your chest for professional reasons, and I don’t blame you. I do not expect to see figures branded about on the forum, similarly I will not be posting the URL, but if you could PM me with your guesstimates of what I should quote.

I really want to do this as I sit in the shade during the day but don't want loose it because I quoted too much! But I don't work for penuts. I am really in the dark here guys so any help would truly be appreciated.

For your information the coding used will be HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP.

Many thanks for reaching the end of this post and sticking with it!

Of course the other way of looking at it is simply... how long do you think each thing will take you to do and then multiply that by what an hour of your time is worth.
