Learning about web workers

Featured Replies

Just wondered if 'workers' in Javascript are too complex for a beginner to use? I've just started to look into this and am struggling to understand when you would actually need one. It could be too advanced for me at the moment - I only started to learn Javascript a few months ago and would probably consider my usage quite basic...

Web workers are a way of running multi-threaded js applications in the browser environment. Normally JS runs on a single thread of execution, really unless you're building something huge then what you might gain from web workers is negligible. JavaScript on a modern machine can execute tens of millions of lines a second.

They are also pretty complex and definitely not something a beginner should be worried about at this stage.

The biggest performance bottleneck in JavaScript applications is the DOM API, things that cause repaints, style recalculation REALLY slow things down, if you want to research on improving JS performance look here first.
