Hey all,

 

It's been a while since I started a topic but I'd like to know your thoughts on the fairly new domain names up for grabs ranging from .accountants to .me,

 

Anyone who knows me will know that I've been on a bit of a design hiatus and getting caught up in the dark arts of marketing (don't worry - I haven't joined the darkside) but I'm the first to raise my hand to say I am unsure of the benefits/flaws and whether they are worth using over the ever faithful .com.

 

To whittle it down, I'm looking at setting up a couple of domains for some previous clients and even myself. Most are consultancy based but I'm wondering whether which domains have the most clout. I'm looking at .digital for one of them (though I'd prefer .uk as they are exclusively UK) and the .me for myself.

 

Any thoughts, experiences? Most clients want to go with .org or .com but I'm curious whether I should be moving forward with these new options.

I think it'll be a while until these new domains are 'opted' for by the general public, at the moment most people are confused by them. A good example is a client of mine who registered .co domain for their company, they came back two weeks later and asked for support registering the .co.uk as too many people were getting confused.

 

I certainly like the amount of creative freedom these new domains give us one with even more possibilities. I picked up a few weeks ago - craftedinthe.uk (now time to do something with it!).

 

I think the point I'm trying to get to is register one of these new ones, but keep the .com/org/uk for those not so tech savvy people.

Thanks mate - good points. I think what it all boils down to is the end user so for the time being, I'll stay with conventional domains for clients and recommendations. Still toying with the .me option for myself which I am hoping can translate to being both personal and used in a business sense.

 

For the record, I love your recent addition craftedinthe.uk - great name and very envious of you!

Woohoo - I have been worried! I almost expected you to start talking directional cues, encapsulating, etc, etc. (joke )

Please don't, I won't bear the community losing another designer to the "dark side". (also a joke )

I use to own my jacktracy.me with the intention of putting together a little site. I don't think I renewed it in the end (trying not to sit on so many domains this year!).

 

Must put that back on the todo list.

I've got a .me domain. I can't remember why I bought it, I think it had something to do with it coming free with something, but it has been my main domain for a while, with co.uk used just for email.

 

I think .me and .uk are probably the most adopted out of the new TLD's (that I've seen around anyway). A lot of the others seem to gimmicky, sort of like what people were doing years ago with domains like di.gg.

Nope - just ROI, PPC and hack Ha ha! Everyday I get home I'm gooning around with design ideas to keep me 'pure'!

Yeah, I'm kind of siding with .me and .uk at the moment. I don't want to be overly clever or have a domain that's too long. The shorter the better as far as I'm concerned.
