Hi. I am looking for some help to design a recruitment website. It's the search facilities I am struggling with. I did employ a web design company but they ended up making such a mess I got rid of them, and a good chunk of money. Now lookk g to see if anyone would help / advise. Unfortunately I don't ha e a budget anymore and its out of my own pocket , so can't afford to pay , at the moment. I am trying to learn how to code , but is going to take me years. Any help / advise would be so very welcome. Thanks

Think about the main users of the site, most likely people looking for jobs! What do they need to find jobs they're interested in?

 

For a typical job search you may want to consider options such as:

 

1. Basic keyword search

- I can search for a word such as "marketing"

- I get a list of all jobs that mention that work irrespective of anything else

 

2. Keyword search + industry

- here I can search for "marketing" and select a specific industry such as "Catering"

- I get a list of all jobs in Catering that mention "marketing"

 

3. Keyword search + industry + salary

- here I can search for "marketing", select a specific industry such as "Catering", and select a salary range such as "20k-30k"

- I get a list of all jobs in Catering that mention "marketing" and have a salary of 20k-30k

 

4. Keyword search + industry + salary + location

- here I can search for "marketing", select a specific industry such as "Catering", select a salary range such as "20k-30k", and select a location such as "Bognor Regis"

- I get a list of all jobs in Catering that mention "marketing", have a salary of 20k-30k, in Bognor Regis

 

That's just a few examples.

 

You could also use a "filter" style search without the keywords field, eg provide select options for:

 

Industry (eg Catering)

Salary range (eg 20k-30k)

Location (eg Bognor Regis)

- that way the customer can choose what options they want to use for the search, those that aren't selected just default to "all".

 

If you're really stuck browse through a few recruitment sites to see how they approach things...

Are you using a Content Management System or writing from scratch?

Hi. Basically all I have at the moment is an idea.originally the website was being done from scratch. So really I am starting from scratch. I have no idea how to build a searchable database into a website. Basically one I can add and remove search options with ease.

If you already have contents ready and having problem with coding, why don't you try wordpress. You need minimum coding, and customize your site well.

Wordpress is the way too goo!! just pick a nice template that fits your needs the less you will have to work and customize it and remember you can always add more functionality with plugins

I would advise against the use of plugins for WP. this is the CMS's biggest fault, you have absolutley no quality control over them. Wordpress can be good if used correctly and throwing plugins at it is likely to cause problems. There are two plugins that I would recommend and only these two: Advanced Custom Fields and SEO by Yoast. that's it.

Any further functionality I recommend you write yourself. And Don't use a pre-made template only to hack away at it. again it will result in a very poor product, think of it like taking a saloon car and sawing the roof off to make it to a convertable, the chassis is gonna break

 

As you are new to coding I'd say this kind of project would be way beyond your capabilities unless you have the time to spend 12 months learning. Find an agency who have proven results in building these kinds of systems.

Hi , Sorry for the late reply , been away a few days. I have had a look at wordpress.com and still a bit confused. Am I missing something , is wordpress solely online or is it is offline format also.
