Hey guys, I am new (in this forum and in UK).. I am from Austria and just moved to your very nice country.. well, I need your help or some recommends.. I am a freelancer and I want to make some very nice flyer in order to get more customers.. which (online) print shop is good..?? It should have a good balance between price and quality.. thank you for your help and waiting for your suggestions... Miri

Also worth noting that leaflets and flyers are non-rated for VAT as long as certain criteria are met.

 

Note there is also a difference between leaflets and flyers but the differences in definition are so intangible that gov.uk has not as far as I'm aware been able to successfully prosecute any of its citizens over this.

 

Essentially if the printed material is designed to be read and then disposed of it is zero rated. If it is designed to be retained by the recipient for any reason it is rated for VAT. This page gives a pretty good description of the issue.

Many printers charge VAT on this type of material, some in error due to fear of the Customs and Excise and others as the mug punter doesn't know and they pocket the 20% as a bonus.

I'd be very weary of many cheaper online options, often you sacrifice quality in favour of a lower price, and this low quality will put off a lot of clients, meaning you'll be stuck with the cheap clients who decide who they're hiring based entirely on price. Also, many of these print jobs are outsourced to other countries, so check the small print when it states "overnight" as this might not actually be the case

 

As for recommendations, I've used Stationery Direct before and they're very good. They're based in the UK and deliver swiftly. Also, if you're a member of another forum *cough* you can get a discount on A6 flyers.

I've used a few different ones over the years, and they all seem to have their merits and weaknesses. The three that come to my mind right away are Vistaprint, wir-machen-druck and Saxoprint. Here's my take on the three:

 

Vistaprint - fast delivery and you can see what your print will look like (it worked fine for me) right away. Drawback was the print quality. Acceptable but not brilliant.

 

wir-machen-druck - average delivery time, low-cost, print result acceptable but also not brilliant. Drawback is that he site is hard to navigate (and it's still only in German), but they do have some cool paper types I haven't seen anywhere else. Only up to 250 or 300 g/m2 though. Too light for a business card, anyway.

 

Saxoprint - average delivery time (but they do at least offer express options), prices are reasonable, which means higher than the other two above. The site has an add-on for InDesign, which is cool for those who don't want to dish out thousands for an Adobe Suite. Drawback is that you can't see how your print will look before you send in your files. Not a problem if you know what you're doing. That said, the print itself is gorgeous.

 

Facit: My choice for the future would be Saxoprint. Costs a little more, but the result was worth it.

 

I guess it's always a matter of your own priorities though, right?
