February 15, 201412 yr Hi there I hope someone can help. A friend of mine is looking to start out as a web designer - unfortunately I cant help her with my business (Im struggling for work as it is). Im looking for ideas for her to find an apprentice/junior role at a web design agency. So far with no luck, cant seem to find any information to local apprentiship schemes. They all seem to be too far for commute. She has photoshop and HTML/CSS skills (from positions in web design jobs she done abroad), she is finding it difficult as she doesnt have any known qualifications in the UK. What is her best route? Any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks
February 15, 201412 yr Has she got a portfolio online? Apprentiships in our industry are few and far between, and probably only the bigger agencies in bigger cities would offer them (you maybe found a few in London?). I'd suggest she emails/calls/visits every design company in the area she can reasonably commute to and ask - the worst they can so is no, but if they take her contact details you never know if something may turn up, even if it's just a temporary role. Also it's worth her considering freelancing in the menatime, that way agencies could outsource work on an ad hoc basis, then if a full time job arises she will already be know and stand a better chance. Then there's always networking, going to any local business meetups etc...
