January 22, 201412 yr Hi everyone, I'm redesigning my website and blog after a long illness and taking the site offline during it. I looked at the site yesterday, and decided this was the perfect opportunity to update the site with current best practices. I'm looking at the content as well, and looking through my biog, it feels very "professional" but not "approachable". Here is an excerpt: =========================== Martin trained as a singer from the age of 8 under David Whitehead and Henry Herford. He studied conducting under Ben Pope and Colin Touchin, and holds a Master’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of York.Musical direction and supervision credits include Blood Brothers (London & UK tour), Les Misérables in Concert (Kidney Cancer UK charity concert), Over The Rainbow – The Eva Cassidy Story (UK tour), A Viennese Strauss Gala (UK tour), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (UK tour), Doctor Dolittle (UK tour), Lulu (Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010), 20th Century Rock Musicals (UK tour), The Billie Holiday Story (UK tour), Cirque du Ciel – Shanghai (UK tour), and Christmas pantomimes at the Oldham Coliseum (2002), Gracie Fields Theatre Rochdale (2004-07), Webster Memorial Theatre Arbroath (2009), Lighthouse Theatre Kettering (2010), and Lighthouse Arts Centre Poole (2011-12). =========================== I'm wondering if, in this day and age, it's worth a rewrite in the first person, making it slightly more informal, while keeping all the credits there. Any thoughts appreciated! Cheers, Martin
January 22, 201412 yr I always prefer first person. If you write in 3rd person it appears as if someone else has written it, which, when you consider it, it's your site/blog and you are talking directly to your visitor.
January 22, 201412 yr I'm not sure whether there are conventions in the world of music I'm more familiar with photography sites where I see both styles - but I personally prefer first person.
January 22, 201412 yr Author Thanks guys! Jane - my biog was written for theatre programmes, which are always in the third person. Up to now, I've been lazy and just used the same biog on my site, but I can see the advantages of going down the first person route. I just started the rewrite, and came up with this as a first sentence: "I started my musical career at the age of eight, training as a choirboy under David Whitehead" Think I might have to rephrase that!! Thanks! M
January 22, 201412 yr "At the age of eight I started my musical career, training as a choirboy under David Whitehead"
January 23, 201412 yr I agree with the majority - write in first person. It is easier to write as well as it creates a clear perspective for the story.
