I'm thinking about trying to find a job in the web design sector soonish, not necessarily doing web design or development but possibly as a content author or general manager type position.

I'm wondering if my portfolio is suitable to be looking for work and showing to potential employers.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

I just had a mosey around your Pixel Coder website and it immediately struck me as something I wouldn't look too carefully at if I were recruiting a copywriter, content writer, blogger etc - it's simply a web design company site. So to me, it doesn't reflect the job role you wish to take up. Plus it's a company, you're an individual. Even if you run the company solely, it would still seem to employers that a 'company' is applying for a vacancy.

 

It wouldn't take too long to mock up a content writer portfolio site (how much can there be?) - just a few pages about you, your content work, contact info etc - the usual stuff, make it look nice and go from there. Even if your Pixel Coder site looks better than your to-be content authoring site, it still sends out the wrong message. I wouldn't submit a portfolio about my worldwide commercial blogging to a company wanting a web designer, after all.

Hopefully I can give a couple of pointers;

 

In terms of content writing and what people especially online are looking for:

Regular, interesting and opinionated pieces.

Blog posts on multiple sites

Demonstration of these posts and content being engaged with - i.e. it is sparking a response.

 

Your own portfolio should then have snippets of content and links to it which would then allow prospective employers look at real-life examples of your content.

 

I agree with Simon - you need a simple site, your content will speak for itself, and choosing a domain that is neutral Alistairscomments or viewsbyalistair or rossiniwriter etc... the catchier the better.

 

Introduce social sharing of your content from your portfolio and so this can demonstrate your social media integration and engagement ability etc.... these are all skills that design and agencies are looking for.

I'm going through a transitional phase of life right now and looking to shift away from web design entirely. Hence the current changes on the domain.
