Google Webmaster tells me I have more like 28k different links to my site, but most of these are from one forum site in which my link is displayed. In actuality, my backlink profile sucks and I don't know how to improve it. :p

Yeah webmaster tools isn't actually great for that kind of information. You would expect it to be better!

Surely it's not quantity, it's quality. I've heard of SEO firms, settings up blogs and then back-linking.

 

Getting back-links from a blog/website that has nothing to do with their niche market. Etc.

 

How can you monitor that ?

CHEWX, you're right that it's quality over quantity. But what if I have 1,000 quality domains pointing at me? Then it's gonig to take a while for someone to overtake that. So yes, quality over quantity but a huge amount of quality will win. Thats my job and thats why I rank a lot of clients for high competition keywords.

 

It's easier to monitor and a lot of people leave huge footprints that Google picks up on. I've seen 2,000+ private blog network just get taken down recently because of footprints.Google doesn't just follow links, it creates a visual map of how web pages are linked together, where they are, who owns them etc.

 

People will always game Google, thats a no brainer. People make a lot of money doing it. But what Google are targeting are the average Joes that sniff around SEO, think they sort of know what they are doing and buy a few links.
