So I've made a new version of my website - stephenrance com - and would like some feedback. I am currently updating portfolio content as I type this and it will be uploaded shortly, but apart from that, fire away!

I like it - nice and clean. Minimalistic design is always a challenge, but you have got it right.

 

The only thing I would say is maybe you need more prominent call to action, as it is not very defined at the moment.

 

I like your style ( from what I can see so far) and look forward to see more of your work.

I would change the media queries to action before having the content flush to width.

 

Also I would add a nice mouseover over the circles on the portfolio page, as there's nothing to suggest you can click on them.

@Ryan - Yep, not %-based however as I have floating/fixed elements I don't want to wresstle with right now to get right, but may go back to it shortly!

Hey mate, looks good so far.

 

Beware that for your branding text that it does not transition correctly, there is a small part of the 'e' in Rance that remains black

 

Also would be a little wary of what you name the elements, for the header you have it set to 'top' & your date posted on as 'date', perhaps you could review these?

 

Also I do think the #f0558a & #222 work but not so sure about the content #666 with the others

@nellyshark - Thank you for your comments. I'm aware of the transition affect, I'm pretty gutted about that and am looking to fix it asap! I'll change the element names you've mentioned and I see what you mean about the #666 - I'll have a play around and see what results I get. Thanks again!

 

EDIT: @nellyshark - I fixed the transition affect (it was a width issue) and I've changed the "date" element name to "post-date and "top" to "top-of-page" - just waiting for the files to update. @teodora - I moved the call to action up a bit into the introductory paragraph, it isn't a big in-your-face graphic or such but I hope it's an improvement?

At certain screen resolutions you are getting a x scrollbar- so you need to trigger your media query earlier.

 

Also mobile wide there is too much header white space, I would change the navigation to display inline or use another solution like a burger or drop-down menu.

I like the minimalist design and your limited use of colour.

 

I'm not an expert on copy but I did notice that there isn't a clear target audience. It looks as if you are seeking work (obviously as you said it) but you've made certain assumptions about the reader:

 

Unlike some, my website currently works on all modern browsers, even the lesser versions of IE we don't like - thanks to the use of Google's html5shiv and my own cross-browser-friendly markup.

I would be wary of assuming that those reading your CV etc. don't like IE. Often recruters are not very tech savy.

 

If you are focusing on smaller companies where a developer may be reading your CV I would be more specific here:

I like the whole minimalism you've got going and the website is clearly laid out and easy to navigate.

 

I too am hoping to find work as a front end developer here in Stockholm so I will be looking on with interest.

Have you considered perhaps offering to work for free for a trial period for an agency It is something I am toying with but still a little unsure if this method of getting noticed is a good one.

@rbrtsmith - I haven't thought about my next plan of action yet as I am hoping to get the majority of my content/portfolio polished off first, but I will definitely look into that! Thank you and good luck to you too!

 

Am glad the majority are liking the layout and feel of the page, means alot to me as I'm still learning! Just need to apply the changes suggested and a couple more tweaks and I think I'm good to go, thanks again!

Yeah really like this site, wasn't too keen on the blue one, but this is very nice in my opinion. Couple of things, I think your Google Analytics should be in the <head> though. I see you've not actually specified a head and haven't closed the <body>. Whilst this obviously isn't needed in HTML 5 I feel it's just good practice, just personal preference though I guess.

 

Can I ask how your navigation stays put!? It's not fixed and I can't see any javaScript keeping it there as you scroll down. I assume I'm missing something really obvious...! Edit: Ahh the <ol> is fixed!
