I'm just curious as to whether or not it's "safe" yet to use PNGs in websites, i'm aware that IE6 has a problem rendering transparencies in PNGs. Does anyone know the percentage of the web browsing population that uses IE6 or of any other browsers that throw up problems?

 

I only ask because the alpha channel stuff in PNGs is far superior to GIF transparency.

Just been using PNG's more than gifs today for the first time due to needing transparent, top quality images with photos in. Just whack on this ie6 hack - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/bobosola/ - and you're sorted.

 

Looked at Google Analytics to see the percentage of IE6 users but it doesn't seem to break down IE into versions, which is a tad annoying.

It does, you just have to do a breakdown by clicking on the browser name when clicking on the browser stats, this will bring up information on which version of the browser people view with

Yeah, so I got an average of 20% - 33% of all IE users use IE6 - which is about 10-20% of all users in total. So definitely worth using the hack to fix your PNG's for them.

IE6 is sadly still very popular with many big companies, who tend to be slow to update their browsers for various reasons.

 

I'd guess most home users are with IE7 by now

At April 2008 29% of people are apparently still using IE6. Down by 3% since the start of 2008. I reckon it'll be the end of 2009 before we really see the baack of IE6.

 

Interestingly if you took stats from the users of this board I reckon that'd be more like 1% !!! Why - well it's gonna be more browser savvy individuals reading this forum.
