Ok so I was thinking.. When I make a site for someone I will finish it and often that will be that. But what if I did the hosting myself and charged a similar fee to generic web hosts.

 

I tried looking it up and all I could find were crappy demos of setting up a silly domain name through X-ampp.

 

Is this idea technically and financially feasible? Surely you guys have covered this in the past.. Thanks!

Having your own servers is VERY expensive and time consuming, don't bother.

 

Instead go have a search for "Reseller Hosting". The basic idea is that, like normal web hosting, you rent server space from a hosting company. However, with reseller packages you're allowed to re-brand the service and sell it to others yourself. The web hosting company handles all the servers, support, etc... you just do the marketing.

 

Nearly all web hosting companies offer the service, it's just a matter of finding a host that you like at a good price.

The hassle with resellers is that if you decide to stop your account, your clients sites will disapear. Might end up with some grumpy customers!

Also remember that the client will come to you first for support, so what happens if you're down the pub early on a Friday... tough?

 

Just one thing to consider, especially if like us you handle a 100+!

A VPS might be a good solution, that way you run your server, whats on it, updates etc so your in full control. If your looking for stability, security and reliability then thats your best choice!
