Good idea or Bad idea?

 

I still have a lot to learn about web design and would love some help from you guys. I always thought an under construction page would be ok, to tell people when the site would roughly be ready to go live or to have some simple info or contact info. I've read some articles that mostly seem to say it's a bad idea.

 

I had an under construction page up for a site, for about a month, and I've recently finished the site and now after about a week of it being live, in Google it still comes up as 'under construction'. I've just added Google Analytics to the site, hoping that might help a little, after a day, still nothing.

 

Any ideas on that?

Create a Google friendly xml sitemap, upload it to webmaster tools and Google will queue your site for spidering.

This has been argued about on here before, many times infact!

 

My opinion, if done right, holding pages (under construction sounds crap!) can be a valuable asset to any new website.

 

It gives the domain a headstart in the search engines and also helps promote the site ready for its pending release. Much like a band, or product manufacturer would advertise their products before they are actually released. It's called marketing, and good marketing leads to great sales

 

I know some people on here will slate them, and that's fine, it's their opinion. But if nicely done, it will create a buzz and generate traffic to the site.

 

Get things like social media links, a newsletter signup etc on there and it will all be good

I agree with roothost. Under construction page is a good way to have a head start. However, using a splash page might be a better way to create a head start. Create a page with basic information of your website or something that is fun to look at and can introduce your website well. People that visit your website will actually do something there, rather than only having a under construction message, which doesn't really benefit you and the visitor, except that head start that roothost mentioned.

After reading your posts, thinking now I should put some info into the main area and change the page title to the name of the website. I've put a site live last Friday, after having an under construction page up for about 1 month. It still comes up as 'under construction' in Google, you think it'll be like that for another 2/3 weeks?
