'Sup Alex!

Nice crisp colour scheme, nice buttons (I'd remove the link border in FF) -

a {
outline:none;
}

I like the logo concept, but I'd consider using a less "contemporary" font (IMO, the modular flattened text is a bit "rave flyer" circa late 90's). I'd also lose the vertical borders, the layout takes care of that it self, and it clashes with the nice horizontal flow of your site - which I thought was a plus point.

Last point, and this is more of a personal gripe - I HATE Lightbox - it's as common as magnolia paint, everyone uses it on their portfolio sites these days. It's a great effect, but it's in such wide circulation it's lost it's impact IMPO. That's just my personal taste though.

Pretty tidy though, and nice work in the portfolio too.

'fraid I'm going to have to give it a thumbs down :(

PRoblem for me is it looks similar to a bajillion other sites out there. Like a template, basically. The only spot of individuality is the logo, and even that is basically just a dolphin outline and what looks a standard unaltered font.

Sorry I've got to agree - although it is well-executed. I honestly thought it was one of those 'icon factory' sites at first glance. I think you've got a good eye for design so just rip-up convention and let your talent out! :D

It does look like a template, yep, but, it's a very pretty template. :)

The textbox in the footer could do with being a bit narrower (and having smaller text) so it's the same width as the link below it.

Nice clean work Alex. The guys are probably right about the templatey look but don't let this put you off as you can obviously produce some good work. I like your clean, bold graphics....

Hi guys (and gals)

Thanks for all the comments! I honestly didn't expect so many...

About the site looking like it's a template... hmm maybe it does. I might have taken the 'mininmalistic' style and put it down in a bit of a generic way. But... I must say I like it (for the time being anyway ;) ) and I've got a few clients on the go too so I can't afford to spend time reworking it.

Thanks guys!

PS sunwukung; the border in firefox doesnt show up for me :huh: where about are you seeing it?

The border he is referring to is the "active state" border - the dashed grey lines that appear when you click a button.

It's a preference and accessibility thing whether to remove it or not, as if you remove it the site looks prettier, but also people who use tabbing to get around the site will no longer know where they are.

I do like this site, I understand what the above folks are saying about it being templatey, but it is a very nice templatey site!!!

I think the problem is that everything fits into the horizontal spaces a bit too much, I would like to see the dolphin jumping out of one horizontal space into another, to break the lines and create some unity between the spaces.

Also, what is the black stuff in the background on the logo? On my monitor if i look from the right angle I can see a very faint change in colour in random blobs and shapes and I can't work out what they are? It actually looks like you've coloured over something with a black which isn't quite the same as the background colour?

I don't think it would take too much to break the mould with this site and create something totally orignal. It really is beautiful.

Hi ErisDS

Oh right. I know what you mean now. I'm going to leave it in, for accessibility. Thanks for the pointer ;)

Hmmm yes I like the sound of that... kinda breaking out a little more.... hmmm...

I'll see what I can do when I get time, thanks :D

Black stuff around the logo is (or was supposed to be) kind of grunge, although I don't think it's working to well... Maybe I should remove it?

Cheers!

Alex

I think you should remove the "grunge" effect, as it is so faint it looks like it isn't meant to be there as I suggested ;)

i think there is too much internal space for a site with so little content.

if you reduce the width of the site then there appears to be a little more content, and pushes the space to the outside. this helps maintain a "fresh & clean" look and reinforces your grid layout.

See attached as a quick example. see how your portfolio wraps nicely to three rows of 4? ( i wouldn't place more than 12 on the home page)

then, personally, all you need to do is really go wild with your footer to bring it to life and you'll have a nice looking site.

p.s. the "grunge" effect looks like you might have "borrowed" the image and removed ceertain parts... so please clean it up.

Grunge removed ;)

WelshStew, thanks but I'm going to keep the site as it is. I like a lot of space, i think it makes everything feel clean and uncluttered. But thanks anyway ;)
