Hello from Plymouth / Oxford based freelancer!

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

As with quite a few people today, I picked up on this forum from the Smashing Magazine post. I've actually been meaning to look into joining a UK-based design forum, but I've been extremely busy recently!

A bit about my background... I'm 22, about to graduate in Digital Art & Technology from the University of Plymouth. I worked freelance for 16 months during a 'placement year' at university, going from 0 clients to holding a nice income.

I'll be finished at university as of 15th May. From then on, I'll be working on developing a business and driving things forward!

So... Hi! :)

-Craig

Hi Craig :hi:

How is Plymouth these days? I may be about to move back there after 14 years! :o

It's pretty nice down here nowadays! I've only been in Plymouth for 4 years due to University, but in that time alone I've seen some pretty big changes. A lot of the city centre has been redeveloped, including a huge shopping centre. The university is expanding exponentially, which seems to be developing the local economy. Lots of EU funding is helping with city development too ;)

I used to live right near the centre of Oxford (had done since birth), but I actually prefer the life down here at the moment.

I'm about to look for a place to live in the next couple of months (living with student friends at the moment), so I'll soon see how nice the real rented properties are :)

Hi Craig, welcome to the forum!

Hi Craig,

Welcome from another former Plymouthian!

Do you live in one of the student flats near Drake's Circus that has all the beer cans in the window?

If so you should be ashamed of yourself!! :p J/K

Gotta love all the folks who complain about their taxes going to student loans and being spent on booze... cos like where does all the money for booze go? Oh yeah! Back into taxes :p

Never could figure that one out!

@notbanksy... moving back? what on earth?!

@notbanksy... moving back? what on earth?!

Tell me about it!

Fate deals me yet another unexpected hand. Looks like notmrsbanksy's life's work is taking us back to Plymouth where we met, and we're going to rescue horses by the sea.

I'm excited and terrified in equal measure

You're rescuing sea-horses! :o

You're rescuing sea-horses! :o

Not quite ;)

We'll be by the sea, rescuing horses :)

Haha! I used to live there 3 years ago... St Thomas Court, it's called, just 2 seconds from Drake's Circus. It was actually our flat that started the trend when the building was first in use! I now live right next to the Uni :)

Hi Craig from a fellow Oxfordian!

How is the old city? Haven't been back for years - really must one day.

Anyway - welcome to the mad house!

Oxford's still nice, but I'm only really there to visit the family nowadays. The house prices and living costs in Oxford are terrible, so I'm currently in Plymouth living with a few more pennies to spare!

My family say that I've picked up a few of the quirky parts of the south-western accent... and that I sometimes say my 'R's like a pirate! :flm7:

Like my mate Carl who was born and interbred on a farm on Dartmoor - we used to joke that his father would shout:

'Coral, Coral! It be half past bloody four baint no time for no lyin get out there and feed 'em pegs n' coos'

(Coral is as close as I can get to describing the rolling 'R')

Funnily enough, I travel sooo much and have not really got a particular accent any more and, when I visit my family in rural Oxfordshire/Gloucestershire they sound as 'farmy' as Devonites - so God knows how strong I'd find the Devon accent now!

My advice? Get back to Oxford and speak like one should!!!!!! ;)

Glad you joined the forum. I am fairly new here myself but i have found it really really helpful. As i am a beginner, the guys (& girls) have pointed me in the right direction in terms of good advice on how to progress with my news skills.

Good Luck in what you do and be sure to know you are in good company :D
