February 25, 201214 yr How come some websites by-pass the use of www. for example http://api.jquery.com/ How has it managed to change www for api. :S also how can I do this if I had a website called www.example.co.uk on a host like godaddy or media temple? Thanks
February 25, 201214 yr www. is not needed. You can get rid of it my modifying htaccess files or setting up a 301 redirect. however to get the api.jquery.com they just set up what is known as a sub domain. This is very easy to do in your server control panel.
February 25, 201214 yr Note that some hosts will not allow sub-domains on some hosting plans. Heart for instance will not allow them on their lower priced plan. In this instance you will need to use a sub-folder. e.g. http://www.example.com/sub-folder/
July 17, 201214 yr Hi Benhawk, Many websites make use of sub-domains other than WW, although WWW is the most common one. Many times they will be used for specific purposes like api.domain.com or shop.domain.com. So essentially you can keep different parts of your business/site separate while having the consistency of the same domain. Often times people will force the WWW to be used to that when you search for that domain, you always get the whole URL, in other cases the WWW will be stripped entirely. This is many times performed using a .htaccess.
