My second website

Featured Replies

Hello, I'm studying web technologies and I'd like to present you my second website to review. Would be glad for any response.

It's not a usual website - I'd say it has no design at all :) It's a sort of web service. Using it you can create your own graphical boards for drawing and share them with your friends. You can do it in a few steps:

1. Think up an original name for your board, for example, CAT.

2. Type the address of your board in your browser address bar: http://sharedboard.hostei.com?name=CAT'>http://sharedboard.hostei.com?name=CAT

3. Open your board. Congratulations - now you have a graphical board for drawing!

4. Send the link of your board http://sharedboard.hostei.com?name=CAT to your friends, publish it on your blog, website, twitter, forum, etc.

5. You can insert the image of your board into your website using HTML tag: <img src="http://www.sharedboard.hostei.com/CAT" >

CAT is the name of a file where the image of your board is kept.

For example, here is MY BOARD

You can draw something there and save, and I'll see it :)

What do you think about the usability and usefulness of this service?

seems very easy to me (could maybe have a text box on your home page, type in the unique name press submit and it will take you to your board.

Only thing is if someone types in a same word as you, they will see your board and can draw over it

fun project though : )

I like the idea & how it works, it wouldn't be something I'd probably use myself but I can see there being a market for it. I have a couple of suggestions;

It would add a lot to it if you could include basic shape tools.

I think you need to reconsider the site design. Look at some landing/holding/coming soon pages for inspiration. Work out what you think will be your main target audience, and design with that in mind.

I agree with Treend about having a text box & submit button to take you to the url. Can these somehow be made private?

Good luck!

With things like Skype and screensharing, this all seems a bit dunfunct. I can;t see why anyone would want to share some random paint doodles - unless I'm missing something major?

Well, I don't pretend to compete with Skype or whatever else. Though I hope it could be useful in some cases. For example, if you have a blog and would like to have a kind of a "wall" for your readers to draw on it to express their feelings you could give them a link to your board and you can put the image of the board directly onto your blog, so everybody could see it.

I agree with you. A bit of web design would make the site better. I know a bit of PHP and javascript but nothing about web design so now I have to get into the basic web design principles to reconsider the site design :)

Also I agree with you and Treend that having a text box and submit button is much more user friendly than just typing commands in an address bar.

Regarding the basic shape tools - I have thought about it. But it takes time to do it.

Thank you for your good wishes!

well, I agree, a text box and submit button is much more user friendly. As to the privacy of board - you can think out a really unique name, for example, gffsduyfsduyFGFKcvhgv, so nobody can type it again :)

Cool idea! Can imagine it might liven up the workplace at a few procrastination-heavy offices...
