I was wondering if its worth making a domain name private. I'm designing a blog that will eventually contain confidential information and like everyone I hate spam. Is it worth making the domain private or is this just a sales ploy or a method of controlling domains used by hosting companies?

Private as in WHOIS opt-out?

Making your domain name private will ensure that noone can find you from search engines.

 

If you make your site password protected and keep your email private from the public, you can generally avoid spam.

If you're thinking about WHOIS Privacy then it does offer benefits like as you say hiding your personal information from the WHOIS database. If done properly, WHOIS privacy won't change the ownership of your domain so you'll still be in control.

Yes private as in a WHOIS opt out. I didn't do it directly when buying the domain but I'm working on a WP blog that will serve as a private network for a company (I'm planning to use WP Usernames). I know I can modify this but as it will be password protected I'm not sure its necessary (like VIUS said). However I've underestimated the power of spammers/ spambots before. I've also heard that its too late to do if not at the beginning as its already made it onto spambot radar. Right know it is undetectable on search engines but not officially "private" (the term used in domain sales.)So if one happened to guess the domain name or stumble upon it one could look it up.
