BBC Redesign - Integrated Video :)

Featured Replies

So, along with its very nice redesign, BBC has introduced integrated video, which I think is a major improvement as one of my pet peeves with the site before was that there was no text info about any of the videos you watched on there.

Here's a fab video to try out the new look! http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7292600.stm

Yep nice beats the old Real Player etc download. Nice skin too, I won't mention the 'orrible pink media streaming line...

Only remark would be seems no option to choose a download speed?

I think it's great what the BBC are doing with their website, they are really pushing the new media technologies. It was so annoying having to open a pop-up and then decide between Windows Media or Real Player *yawn*.

I like how they are using the iPlayer skin, that will make things a lot easier for non-computer savvy users to comprehend if they've already used the iPlayer—even my dad can use it (and he is useless on computers!). It also just looks really swish and modern, which in turn makes the entire site look more polished and professional.

You'll see more of it as well Rob, whilst jobs in the traditional folds disappear by the 1000's - 'New Media' is an expanding area. There's a real buzz towards the web at the Beeb, a good thing, all that worries me is some 'programmes' will always have a niche market and we have to be careful not to lose our public service and non-commercial outlook.

As unfortunate as it is that jobs are disappearing, the only way the BBC will survive is if they embrace future technologies and keep pushing, I'm glad to hear that they are excited about it. I've always loved the BBC programmes, the website, iPlayer, news and weather just tops off their amazing service tbh.

the google offices should be an inspiration to other offices out there, us web designers need somewhere to get inspiration, food / coffee and away from those annoyingly stressful clients.

Bumholes to the BBC and its new site!!!!!!!

I do love it dearly - so much better than before - I actually went oooh! when I first saw it.

But here's why I say bumholes to it....

I'm from Englandshire and I pay my TV license - I just happen to be lucky enough to spend most of my life travelling abroad! Can I download anything when I'm away? Can I 'eckers like!

I watch very little telly (usually coz it's in Japanese or French or Chinese or whatever) - but I have one show I love more than Mrs. Wizely (she knows don't worry!) and that's The Apprentice (No not the lame 'Good Job Connie' US one). And, every time it's on I get about four episodes into it and then leave the country!!!!

If I wasn't the fine upstanding fellow that I am I would download the lot off something I think's called 'isohunt' and burn the previous 3 series, with some compression utility or other, to about 6 DVD's (which of course I haven't).

Digital Rights Management sir aka DRM.

As your probably aware this is to stop people who don't pay their licence from watching around the world.

It's the only income we have.

Can you not record it off a digibox while your away?

You should know by now I don't know the answer to anything technical!!!!

For just the one show that I like - I'm happy enough with the ways and means I get to see it!

Funny thing is with regards to the BBC and DRM (like I knew what that meant before you spelt it out!) - is that for decades video recorders were blatantly there and I can remember plenty of BBC shows talking about recording this and that - even some educational ones that used the 'Press Pause do your thang then press play again'. So why is it that because it's digital it matters?

While I'm on it - is it the job of the BBC to go into new media at the expense of regular programming? One of he BBC's downfalls of late has been their insistence on trying to following the commercial channels in chasing ratings with tossy phone-ins and reality crud like 'Strictly stars with coke up their nose redevelopment nightmares' (or whatever).

Sure I'll get shredded for being a dinosaur - but the BBC website has an enormous amount of content and yet the average night's viewing was stuffed with filler and junk and repeats!!!!

Right I'll go back to listening to my gramophone records now!

I couldn't possibly comment Sir, as I'm sure you will appreciate.

I too listen to gramophone records B)

Re. video recorders, I believe the concern is distribution of wmv's, flv's, mov's etc via the internet is far easier than running off hundreds neigh thousands of VHS's to post out to strangers...?
