Is there any point in learning actionscript?

Featured Replies

Apart from the obvious, making flash games, is there any other use in industry?

Im currently in my 2nd year of a 2 year course and the 'big' focus is on actionscript. Thing is i'm struggling to get the motivation to learn it, other than the actually get a recognised qual as a potential foot in the door. Is it used or useful in any way if i want to become a web designer? And you hear all the thoughts on forums about flash hardly being required, with advancement of other technologies, it is difficult for me to switch on to something i have no interest in and cant see a point?

Someone please correct me and tell me how wonderful it is, or at least that it will have a purpose!

Any thoughts?

Alan

I know actionscript partially, its come in useful a few times but not often enough that its worth learning. The focus has shifted away from actionscript and onto javascript and HTML5. Although HTML5 is the new kid on the block, the things people are doing with Canvas are incredible.

I can't do anything about making flash action script important but if you want motivation:

-People with high academical scores are more attractive

-Imagine the look on that guy who talks alot and thinks he knows it all when he realises your superiority

-Animals will appreciate your company

In other words... don't ditch your studies cause you find it boring! YOU CANNN DOOOOO IT!

Thanks for the replies! Oh no, ditching my studies is not an option. Taking a couple of years out of 'life' to do this, and then deciding to scrap it? The wife would MURDER ME!!! (if i disappear, you heard it here first!).

No the actual qualification on paper sounds the part (new media design and technology)although the content of the course really isnt the best, i think that is for me to teach myself alongside learning stuff like actionscript - i could go on about the poor content of the rest, but ill leave it there - i was just wondering/hoping that someone might say 'hey do you realise how good actionscript is?!!' - a bit too optimistic, sort of knew that deep down.

Thanks for the replies again!

I'd be interested to see some examples of what is possible.. All I have seen up to now are smiley faces that look like they have been drawn by a 5yr old!

I used to learn action script to create websites, but lately I've stopped because of an article on a newspaper. It said that Flash would definitely be non - existent in the next coming years. People from the Apple company are fighting to get rid of flash. That's the reason HTML5 is on the process of developing.

http://creativejs.com/, you will need to filter through the basic animation and smiley face stuff. There are some nice examples on there.
