  1. Thank you for taking the time to post a reply, and I will work through the links you have sent....I am just not 'getting' structure so hopefully this will give me a bit more clarity

  3. Please look at my site, it is all over the place. I am fairly confident with internet marketing but not with actually making a website, website structure really. I am trying to work out nested divs. I assumed that I would make a blank space of whatever size and that would be a space of 100% and I could work within that, specifiying elements to be the % size of the div it was within, if that makes sense. Anyway I cannot work it out. if someone could look at my source code and even hint me in the right direction then that would be massively appreciated. You can see my current site at www.onlinecreation.co.uk, I know I am doing something wrong in terms of nested divs and proportions but have not got a clue what. Also the footer...I know it looks bad but I have tried changing the background color via css, but I think the structure is wrong as it is not changing it. I have tried making the div borders shown, and yes there seems to be no border around the footer so it is merging in some way. Please please any hints or tips would be good, not surrounding the content, but the actual structure. Thanks in advance Alan

  6. Thanks for the input First pont you raised about the 960 grid...i have looked at that, but from the outside it looks like a structure to place elements? I was or am trying to look at sizes and positioning from a percentage point? In my (self-teaching!) mind i thought percentages would be a good thing to get my head around and work with, what with the various sizes of screens and devices people use now? and with this in mind, would a grid structure not be a good thing? I have watched some HTML5 and CSS3 tuts and they do not seem to discuss any grid theories or the likes? Or am i a million miles out here?? With regards to the subtlety and overall design...many thanks and will definitely take that on board, but I think i am struggling more with something more basic than that - for example even getting the footer to remain on the bottom, without slipping up or between elements.. someone mentioned to be about using a container and from there placing the elements specifically where i want. Aaagh..i am just becoming frustrated...i think i am missing some of the (probably) most basic of web design layout....spent the last 2 years learning things like actionscript, flash, image manipulation, digital marketing, and lots more and i honestly cant seem to get these seemingly very basics down on how to structure.. Thanks again, all points taken onboard and agree with what you have said....but i think i need to take a step back and find some total beginner structuring website tutorials or sites...again, any pointers would be great... But yes in the meanting mike, i will look at every aspect you have mentioned
  7. Thanks Stevo! Today, this is exactly where I will start...right now in fact
  8. Truth be told..very little. I am struggling on some of the basics of posltioning and general work flow (if i have the right phrase..). I am quite knowledgable in certain areas, seo and digital marketing in general with some success..but know very little about aspects that have been already picked up in this thread. I have tried to follow html and css tuts via w3schools, youtube, some html5 basics from channel9 and lots of other places. Someones suggested i look at 'design concepts'..i did and they cover things i need to look at too, but the BASICS...some say use wrappers/containers...i am struggling with footers remaining at the bottom and not appearing halfway up or mingling with other elements....i could go on but you probably get the idea. I do appreciate constructive input but i guess now i would really benefit from some pointer or link to a tutorial that covers what i am asking...not sure if it is specifically positioning or basic site structure...but any pointers that I could go and follow would be greatly appreciated at this point. I am guessing that the people here who know what they are doing will look at my code and know where I should start? Kind regards Alan

  10. *Got rid of the fixed bar at the top, it now moves with the page Also, you mentioned that the head bar wasn't centred...if you mean the text at the top, I did not intend for it to be centred...but it did look a little lost as it was not fully left nor centre...i've adjusted that to be more at the left...
  11. JPWD...not negative at all! I asked for feedback and you took the time to give me specific feedback so many thaks for that! I will look at all the points you have raised and try to address or consider them individually. I agree the fixed header is not the 'perfect' look i was going for...i am hoping for something that appears when hovered over, but first things first in learning all this. The content..yes needs souping up and looking at a bit more...hopefully to say specifically what I am about and what skills I do have to offer. The twitter feed...i have seen a few freelance people do this and thought it would show interest and activity in the digital field? But yes something I will again consider. I was actually going to add a facebook feed too, but yes maybe if this was more business orientated, happy customers etc.. Learnt a bit about fonts and typography, actually did 2 assignments on typography over the last year so really should sit back and focus more on that...I will look at fontface and try to immerse myself a bit and get some inspiration, then give it a try. Glad to hear you have progressed, and also that you were where I am now..there is hope Thanks again Alan
  12. Thanks for merging the thread! Did not consider going back to the old thread, will do this next time One thing, if anyone has any thoughts on the design and layout that would be good. Code is still everywhere, no alt tags or meta yet...purely thoughts on layout, colours, or any other things that they might like to throw at me. Thanks Alan
  13. Hi, i posted my site a few weeks ago and it was thankfully constructively criticised... would love to hear anyones feedback, no matter how vague or specific, so I can work on and better it. Thanks in advance to anyone who would throw their 2 cents worth! my site is www.alanwhitfield.co.uk Kind regards Alan

  15. Thanks for feedback. To be honest I actually liked the transitions, but am listening when you say they scatter everything...I have reduced the difference in font size between the two transitions so it is only a slight movement and see how that goes... What i will do though is look at every aspect then repost, and get advice from there. Great help, thanks! Alan
  16. SOrry forgot, the 'share' option...I tried to cheat a bit and add a pre-made social bar and it added that share option automatically...I just noticed that myself! The bar is now gone and I will add the badges properly. Alan
  17. Hi, many many thanks for taking the time to give such constructive feedback. The content, yes it was sort of thrown together, it was to get the design layout together and get an idea from there, and you have offered just that! I did not even consider the obvious statement of what it was i was trying to do, so thanks again, something to really look at. I will look at each and every point you have raised, and hopefully get back with a revised site ASAP. Just the feedback i was looking for, thanks again!! Alan
  18. Hi looking for feedback on my first draft of my website. I am just about to finish college ('mature' student) and this is the site i have made so far. Any thoughts as to the layout, style, header or other graphics would be fully appreciated! The site is very much a draft, and some content isn't there (i.e. services links aren't clickable yet). Also I am trying to get used to some of the HTML5 and CSS3 syntax, and have tried to use semantic markup, and utilised the transitions in css, so might be good if anyone could look at it in chrome too? Still trying to get my head around positioning, so if there are any problems there again any feedback would be accepted with open arms! My site is here! Thanks for looking! Alan
  19.    asc reacted to a post in a topic: Is there any point in learning actionscript?
  20. Thanks for the replies! Oh no, ditching my studies is not an option. Taking a couple of years out of 'life' to do this, and then deciding to scrap it? The wife would MURDER ME!!! (if i disappear, you heard it here first!). No the actual qualification on paper sounds the part (new media design and technology)although the content of the course really isnt the best, i think that is for me to teach myself alongside learning stuff like actionscript - i could go on about the poor content of the rest, but ill leave it there - i was just wondering/hoping that someone might say 'hey do you realise how good actionscript is?!!' - a bit too optimistic, sort of knew that deep down. Thanks for the replies again! Alan
  21. Apart from the obvious, making flash games, is there any other use in industry? Im currently in my 2nd year of a 2 year course and the 'big' focus is on actionscript. Thing is i'm struggling to get the motivation to learn it, other than the actually get a recognised qual as a potential foot in the door. Is it used or useful in any way if i want to become a web designer? And you hear all the thoughts on forums about flash hardly being required, with advancement of other technologies, it is difficult for me to switch on to something i have no interest in and cant see a point? Someone please correct me and tell me how wonderful it is, or at least that it will have a purpose! Any thoughts? Alan
