August 25, 201115 yr Hi, I have bought my hosting and domain with 123-reg. I have used their App Install for Wordpress. However once complete and i visit the site my URL's look like the following: - mydomain.com/public_html/services Or when you click home button its shown as mydomain.com/public_html/ I checked the FTP info and it seems be be putting the install in /public_html then creating the folder again when installing it so i end up with /public_html/public_html (wp install in 2nd folder) Anyone know why its doing this and how to fix it?
August 25, 201115 yr Author Here is a breakdown of the live support chat with 123-reg, apparently the folder you specify within the public_html is added to your URL structure, so if you create a folder within public_html/sitesname This means you URL structure will be www.yoursite.com/sitesname or www.yoursite.com/sitesname/services. So that folder will always be there. And it cant be removed???? >>> Lucian: (14:17): No, what you will need to do is to create a folder called for example wordpress that will be located in public_html directory and then install the application in there martin h.: (14:17): There is already a public_html folder in my FTP. I install Wordpress and it creates another public_html so i end up with 2 folders called public_html WHICH then messes up the URL structure as it has the domain name/public_html/services etc Lucian: (14:19): Here is a link in order to follow for learning how to install a application on your server : http://www.123-reg.co.uk/support/answers/123-Apps/Linux-Hosting/how-do-i-install-a-123-app-on-my-linux-hosting-1147/ martin h.: (14:19): so if i have a folder within public_html called wordpress will the URL structure look like mysite.com/Wordpress/services etc? Lucian: (14:19): Yes that is correct martin h.: (14:20): Thats stupid! Why would i want the folder name within the URL??? Can that be changed? martin h.: (14:20): Why cant the Blog be installed at the root like most hosting companies? Lucian: (14:21): I can assure that you have the option to hide the folder name. martin h.: (14:21): how would i do this? Lucian: (14:22): In the Free applications management area after installing the wordpress you will have an option "Make this my home page" that will hide the folder name where the application is installed into. martin h.: (14:23): I have tried this in past attempts and it didnt do anything. Is the change instant? Lucian: (14:24): I can make the correct settings for you after you will install Wordpress martin h.: (14:24): ill quickly set the wordpress site up now then, thanks. martin h.: (14:26): Hi, i created the wp install in a folder called HTS Lucian: (14:26): Please wait for a moment to check martin h.: (14:26): for example: - http://www."sitename".com/hts/?page_id=2'>http://www."sitename".com/hts/?page_id=2 Would like to hide /HTS for the URL and all permalinks if poss martin h.: (14:26): thanks Lucian: (14:29): Can you please try to clear your browser's cache and cookies and then try to access your website : http://www."sitename".com/ martin h.: (14:30): cache etc just clearing now martin h.: (14:31): Im still getting the /HTS folder in the url when you click on sub pages ie: http://www."sitename".com/hts/?page_id=2 martin h.: (14:32): if you have a look on the url i sent you and try clicking on pages hts is stil lthere Lucian: (14:32): Please wait to check something martin h.: (14:35): ok martin h.: (14:42): any luck? Lucian: (14:44): I am still trying to change this martin h.: (14:44): ok cheers Lucian: (14:52): Unfortunately there is no way to hide the directory name when navigating through your website links martin h.: (14:52): seriously?? martin h.: (14:54): That is crazy. who wants a random folder name added to their URL? There must be a way to hide / remove this... surely? Other hosting companies are so much easier, and dont have this issue at all! Lucian: (14:55): Unfortunately you will need to contact a web designer who will guide you through the steps of hiding the directory name * Not tried a manual install yet - but my mate had a go and he told me it does the same as above! How can i hide that folder from the URL structure? Edited August 25, 201115 yr by pbul2004
August 25, 201115 yr Author Do you need to edit or add a htaccess file and change it from www.domainname.com/hts to www.domainname.com/ For some reason its adding in the HTS folder in as 123reg forces you to create a folder during the wordpress install so it installs to public_html/hts Does anyone know how to rewrite a htaccess file to hide a folder? I found this but dont understand: - http://www.htmlforums.com/server-side-programming/t-how-to-write-mod-rewrite-to-hide-folder-url-htaccess-121453.html Any ideas?
August 25, 201115 yr Just do a manual install in the root. You wont need to create another folder just drop all the downloaded Wordpress files and folder in to the root and install from there. One click set-ups a pointless when it only takes five minutes to do it without all the extra fluff and nonsense.
August 26, 201115 yr Author Couldnt get the manual install to work, should be a 5min job, done it loads of times, but it was not having it at all. 123-reg are CRAP!!!! Dont ever use them!!! Anyone have any ideas how i can hide that folder within the URL using the htaccess mod rewrite? Now the domain name is not even working! can anyone get on to www. htsgrp dot com? Hope someone can help here, cheers
August 26, 201115 yr Hi I work on behalf of 123-reg. We host hundreds of WordPress web sites. Your web site www.htsgrp.com is viewable to me, I can see your WordPress homepage. Regards, Ricky
August 26, 201115 yr Author Yes its now viewable, however click on sample page and you will notice that it displays the folder /HTS that the wordpress theme was installed in within the URL. Every page you add theres always /HTS infront of it.
August 26, 201115 yr I have tried to call you several times today to discuss this , it should be easy to fix. Do you want to provide your contact number on the support ticket and we can proceed with assisting you. Regards, Ricky
