Been asked to produce a classified type website, for books. You can list books for free, or pay a premium for featured listings and such. Similar to gumtree. Inclusive of design and all coding.

 

How much would you expect something like this to cost ? Likewise with how long it could take ? Approximately.

Obviously this question is about as exact as asking how long is a piece of string but what you're going to have to do is estimate the amount of time it will take and multiply your hourly rate by that. If you end up taking way longer than you expect then at least you'll know for next time.

I'd say that unless you are producing really amateurish work you are worth a lot more. Freelance developers in the Boston area are going for 50-100 USD/hr. Naturally, people in your area might be charging less, but if you price yourself well and are happy with what you charge your clients will eventually come to you regardless.

 

Keep in mind that a low hourly rate like yours tells a lot of clients "This guy's cheap". Even if your work was utterly amazing, the small pricetag is still going to throw up red flags. People think that absurdly high prices are indicative of top-notch quality. That's how some of those agencies get away with charging mind-blowing prices.

 

Advice boiled down: charge a wage you feel is fair to yourself and is reasonably comparable to people in your area. Don't undercut everyone, you will look cheap.

 

EDIT: Oh, and Mike's got it right... Hourly Rate x Estimated Time + Extra for leeway, difficult clients or absurdly quick deadlines.

True. I know what I'm doing, and increasing / improving on my skillset on a day-to-day basis. So around £20 is probably more accurate. I can get things done relatively quickly. If you were to charge a flat fee, what would be an approximate cost. That you would charge, for example.

 

Classified website, back-end CMS, paypal integration.

 

I know it's a hard question to answer. An approximation is all I'm after.
