How do I create a simple website?

Featured Replies

Good evening everyone,

I would like to create a simple modern website. I do not have any experience creating websites but I am good with computers.

The website will need to have users, search bar, results, filter etc. Users need to be able to search for posts by other users. The results need to be small columns and rows of text and numbers but not pictures.

Need help with choosing the most simple but effective CMS, server, programming language, templates, domains etc.

Any comments/suggestions would be great.

Thank you.

CMS = Wordpress/Joomla/Drupal - Some hosts allow you to auto install this on your server, so be sure to look out for them, test each one and decide which one suits your needs.

Server = This wouldn't really matter much since you just want a simple website, but considering most CMS are coded in PHP you're going to want something that PHP can be installed on. Preferably a Linux type.

Programming Language = Definately going to need basic knowledge of HTML, CSS and although not necessary, Javscript & PHP knowledge help too. You can find free online tutorials for them here

Templates = Google. Chose something that suits your needs. You can find several sort of CMS templates at sites like themeforest.com, gorillathemes.com and others.

Domain = Again, this depends on your needs.

All in all, i'd suggest you start by getting yourself a hosting package from a decent hosting company and work from there.

Hope that helped. :)

you culd also post in the looking to hire sections, or send a PM to one of the members, and see if they would be willing to make you a websites. for a fee of course.

I would definitely advise learning HTML & CSS before stepping any further. They are the fundamentals of basic web design and can be learnt quite easily. I wouldn't worry about more complex stuff such as CMS and technical programming languages such as Javascript and PHP; overwhelming yourself will more than likely bring you to a brick wall before you even get started.

Also, like Ash stated, you could always hire - if your website generates revenue via advertising or some other method then you will earn the money back over time; but before you pay out, make sure that the website will be successful.

Good Luck.

I completely agree with this. In my opinion, a "simple website" for someone that knows nothing of web development, does not include a user system!

It seemed to me you are not looking for creating a simple website.

Anyway, check out Creating your own website is as simple as 1 2 3. Hope this may help you. :D

If you have no css or html experience then you might want to check out http://www.w3schools.com/ its an excellent site for learning.

If you don't have the time to learn then you could get a blog such as Blogger or Wordpress. If you want more than a blog and actually want a website then checkout http://sites.google.com/ you can easily make a website but customisation is quite limited.
