Web Designer's Portfolio

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've recently put my new portfolio site live and would like some feedback you guys within the Industry. The site was built using Wordpress and I still plan on ironing out some small issues, but I think this is a good time to get some initial feedback.

I've read other Web site reviews on here and you all seem like fairly honest people so feel free to tell me what you think about my Portfolio site, more in particular whether it succeeds in terms of usability.

Looking forward to your replies!

Hello

I think the scrolling text at the top is distracting. The first thing I looked at was the "mosuro" pic and the navigation. I then had just began reading the first text block (which is actually very important, because it's the only real thing that tells me your a website designer), and it changed to something else midway through. Frustrating. I carried on reading the rest of the site (my eyes always being distracted by the changing text) but had little idea about what was on offer until I got chance to read the first text block again...

I would not have large amounts of text scrolling like that. Portfolio pictures, maybe, but not text.

I think you should maybe replace the scrolling text with changing banners incorporating some of your previous work, and underneath that, have as your first paragraph some catchy text which explains clearly that your a website designer, because that's the first place people read.

I don't like the font with the funny T's and Q's.

I like the design itself a lot, it does look professional (apart from the annoying changing text). I do wonder if it would look better centered though

Edited by Pendulum

i like it, just the page alignment.. im not very comfortable with that, i would try to move the whole page to the center of the screen

Thanks Pendulum and cepa,

I was never too sure about the typeface, and its something I might look at changing, but I will ask a few more people what their initial impressions are. Thanks for the comment regarding the slideshow, I think you're absolutely right actually, when you first visit the site I don't think its very clear exactly what I do, unless users read through the site (which we all know doesn't happen, they scan).

I'll be making some changes over the weekend, anymore feedback would be great.

I will lose the photo or make some more professional...

i agree with alexa, the photo is a bit scary :/ if you dont mind me saying. Feel like your ACTUALLY looking at me :3

Also the moving text scrap it. Static text, well spaced, a nice serif with tweeks of boldness, italic and underline. Nice simple and relates to the user.

I agree the photo was quite a lazy effort and I've actually just taken it down until I find time to take a more professional one. I've also noticed that the site seems to load quite slowly, does anyone know why this might be?

I don't actually know, but after clicking it the site did take a good 6-8 seconds to load? Which iS WAYYYYYYY too long.

But I really do not know? Definitely is more intelligent souls on here, hopefully they will stumble across and answer it.

Im thinking your mosuro side menu bar thing? haha

It should go the whole vertical length of the browser, just a thought.

Yes its definitely loading too slowly, but it could probably be a number of things since I am using Wordpress. I think it will have something to do with one of the plugins or possibly one of my scripts.

I'll post in a more relevant forum section.

Having the fixed sidebar menu fill the screen vertically might work better, I will try it out and see. I can't see it being the menu that's causing the slow loading though, its just an un-ordered list! Nothing fancy!

Thanks

Your website header part isn't so good. You added too much text and you visitors will not read it. They don't like wait. I suggest you to add some of your popular designs. You will get better results. But all other pages are quite good. I like them

The font size thing doesn't work. Although given it's there for accessibility, I assume, that is contra'd by the heading that doesn't give everyone a chance to read it.

In many places in your text you have its instead of it's.

I'll never understand the fascination for putting bar charts or some other skills graphic on a site. What does it mean? How is it measured?

Specialise not specialize.

Contact page, you may want to validate more than just a name/email being entered.

Same page the Callback request box is stuck at the bottom of the page.

And same page, you have a horizontal scrollbar going on.

did you design the Channel 5 logo?

Hi!

This layout is pretty and smart :)

Something in your portfolio looks familiar to this:

Thank you for your comments Zed, very useful. I've adjusted the Five thumbnail too, as I can see how that could confuse some people.

This site looks much better now in my opinion! Only one more thing I would change, being the footer, it is the same as your left navigation menu.

Remember you wont to split it up so content flows, I would make that the same Grey as the your callback request form tags. so where it says: Name or Email. The dark'ish Grey there, I think it will be spot on then!

Come a long way! Nice to see you've taken comments on board and well!
