Its all about Microsoft & Apples history

I don't think the two are really comparable any more. Apple aren't really a computer business, they're focus is on iPods, iPhones and gadgets. Macs are just an extension now, rather than the core of the business.

Let's not forget, Windows powers more than just servers and desktops. You can know that by seeing all the funny pictures of BSDs in public - everything runs on Windows, billboards, terminals, hoardings, Kiosks, Departure boards.

Whereas Apple are clearly the dominant force in music players and mobile devices right now.

I also think the market data presented above is very skewed, it doesn't show stock splits or take into account special dividends so it's not an accurate representation.

I knew someone would come up with that reply. The way I look at it is, if apple didnt have the "i range" (not macs here pods, phones etc) and then microsoft with the xbox and now kinnect would we have seen a new player enter the market or even a possible buy out for one or both of the companies?

i dont think there are many people who could afford to buy out just one of those companies let alone both:

Worlds richest man: $74bn

Apple Inc: $158.66bn

Microsoft: $224.01bn

Your thinking in terms of now, I don't think either company where doing that great before they released they both released respective products. Not many people could have bought out Northern Rock before it went tits up but thats another argument ;)

Touché.

Man... I really should've bought that Apple stock back in 2000. Ugh
