meta tags and og tags

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've just completed a website for a local pub/restaurant. Included is a bespoke Facebook business page - I want to use social media to promote the pub.

I have to make a decision though. Do I use og tags or meta tags (keywords etc . . . ), or do I use both.

Can someone advise me on the best way to implement this please.

Thanks.

You can Use both , but Meta tags(Title, Description and Keywords) are more effective.

Since when was meta keywords effective at all?

Good point! One thing I've been told recently is that search engines don't take meta tags so seriously anymore because people where abusing them and trying to manipulate search engines. Instead search engines give more value to the content of each page of a site.

Is this true?

They don't take any interest in the meta keywords tag, because people abused the **** out of it.

You'd be silly to think that the title and description tags aren't important though, when considering SEO.

The title tag is still given some weight, albeit not a huge amount, and the description is a great marketing tool when your website appears in the search engine results pages (SERPs), because it is the first contact someone has with your website.

But your right in the sense that content is king. Always write your website for the user, not the search engines

That's interesting.

We have seo specialist working for us and they re-wrote the copy of our home page and, in terms of English, it reads really poorly but it does repeat our location and what we do many times in various ways. It just seems unnaturally repetitive. From a seo point of view that might be effective but to the human eye it just looks bizarre!

Do you reckon they're not giving us the best advice?

That's true.

There are a lot of incompetent SEOs who just add keywords to the page without reading it twice, a good Seo will be able to do it properly.

Well the good news is it's not my money but a friend who I work in close association with. We're both getting wiser and more sceptical about the value of the service being provided.

I appreciate everything you've said and, to be honest, I was pretty much arriving at the same conclusion.

As far as copy writing for the web, I've always felt that the same rules that apply to any advertising/marketing campaign should be applied to any website.

It's a relief that search engines are rating "readability". It makes the web a more imaginative and literate place rather than a quagmire of tiresome techno ********.

OK, and this might be another subject altogether but it leads on. I'm thinking 2 things now:

1. If you asked anyone who's invested heavily in an seo programme how much revenue that investment generated I'm sure a minority of companies would give impressive results, but I suspect that the return for the vast majority of businesses is negligible. Is that true do you think?

2. If the above is true, I think the most effective strategy is more conventional marketing activities backed by a well designed, functional and literate website. I'm beginning to believe that this is more effective than any online ppc or advertising investment.

Am I wondering off the path here . . . or what???
