Hosting for several domains

Featured Replies

Hello there guys!

I'm interested in getting some web hosting that would allow me to host multiple domains. Not a massive amount, say around 10 to start with, then if I need more I can upgrade at a later date. Do you know any good hosts that offer this? I've seen a few out there but have no idea which are good. All of them try and bamboozle you with 10 pages of green ticks and unlimited this that and the other. I want a no nonsense reliable host.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

I would recommend a VPS at wizz - http://www.wizzvps.com/ :) I use them and they are really good! As long as your not running apps that are database driven its really good and cheap!

Hi Kirky

Sadly I have to disagree with Tony, a VPS is far from what you need. The last thing you need "by the sound of it" is to have the hassle of messing about with a VPS, creating hosting packages and managing the server as well as the websites too.

What you need is a simple shared web hosting account. Ours for example, allow up to 10 add-on domains per-hosting account, so you can have a total of 11 websites on 1 hosting plan, without the endless pages of green ticks, and we dont do "unlimited" or any form of overselling, just rock solid reliability, with people you can speak to...

Upgrading is seamless and straight forward if you need to later, from as little as £2.50 a month...

Our shared hosting plans can be found here: http://www.wesh.co.uk/hosting/

We have a package for £1pm/£10.99yr which will host 10 addon domains: available at http://www.citycm.co.uk/hosting

Why is your web hosting website sponsored by a toilet cubicle company?

You ONLY seem to offer shared plans and nothing else, so that leaves no room for growth...

Your website comes across more as "a design guy who happens to also sell a bit of hosting"....??

You havent even checked your own shared hosting plans page, see where it says "Smalltick" in EVERY box down the page... You might want to fix that, and the "yearly pricing is white text on white background, you might want to fix that too..

Your live chat doesnt work either, might want to fix that too, and there is NO prices on your website at all for domain names, no terms and conditions visible...

Theres a lot of things missing from your website mate...

Thanks for being so critical! Not quite sure why you feel the need but hey, some people are just like that.

Why our website is sponsored by anyone is no-ones business.

I accidentally deleted some files on our website a couple of days ago so the website isn't perfect but as a new website is due to go live at the weekend and we're busy expanding our hosting packages, I didn't see the need to spend time fixing it, however, the ticks that you mention all work fine, so check your browser.

I did check my browser, checked several browsers. Nobody is attacking you so your "nobody's business" is a bit harsh, it was a simple question to something very odd thats all, but I see you have now fixed the ticks :-)

Nobody is being "critical", but hey, if you never want anybodies help or pointers then thats fine too, but I know if something was wrong with our website and somebody spotted a mistake or something broken, we would want to know about it, and would be grateful for the pointers...

Fair enough and I apologise for my response but it did feel like you were attacking us. We did start out as web designers and still do web design but as the hosting side of things have taken off, we're working hard to expand that side of things and have put alot of money into it over the last 3 years, hence the quality of our servers.

Just a question: Do you forward the domain names to a folder on 1 hosting package? Or is enabled to support 10 domains on its own virualisation? :)

On shared hosting plans like this, it's typical that the domains are forwarded to a particular folder within your main hosting account but it also sets up a dedicated FTP account for that domain.

I've not heard that. I don't see why it would be bad for SEO.

Google as we know isn't an exact science, and SEO is simply a set of techniques that have been tried and shown (or not) over time to improve rankings for a wide (or small) array of sites. The use of multiple sites interlinking with valuable information is something that for a long time Google has ranked highly.

However Google does consider IP, meaning all 10 sites despite being on separate domains will originate from the same source (IP) thus you will gain no benefit, and perhaps be penalised for such a setup. For this reason many who wish to setup such a network of sites choose multiple hosts or hosts which have multiple IP blocks to achieve the desired goal.

This does not take effect for sub domains which are still considered separate entities/sites to the parent URL and will be ranked as such.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I can simply throw our hat into the ring and offer you the choice of any of our shared packages which will for fill your requirements, each can be upgraded instantly within the clientarea at any time. We don't offer unlimited packages however we place no limit on the number of sub domains, databases, emails or otherwise as these can be allocated as you choose to the maximum disk space/bandwidth of the package you select.

Feel free to ask us any questions.

If the OP is looking to gain backlinks to all his sites from all his sites, then yes, the fact that all domains are on the same IP will have a negative effect, however, if the op is just setting up 10 seperate sites that will all be seo'd individually, I can't see why Google would frown on this.

I've got a client that has a couple of addon domains and I have SEO'd for them without any issue and they are ranking well and have been for some time.

Hi Tony

No, its not "forwarding" at all, its mapping a domain to a folder in exactly the same way the primary domain name is mapped to the "public_html" directory, so there is no forwarding going on what-so-ever.

I've heard this is not good for SEO have not had it confirmed but believe it could effect SEO :(

Nope, doesnt affect SEO at all, cpanel "add-on domains" are effectively, totally independant of each other, the only common thing they share is the cpanel accounts resources, and FTP access, thats it.

I've heard that the search engines pick up the other domain names in the same hosting and can effect it?

Nope, not true, as its not possible. Search engines will only ever find content that somebody or something has linked to, or told them about. One example is this:

Take a primary domain name of "website.com" and you then create an add-on domain of "tonys.com", both of these domains/websites will work as totally seperate entities, but, within cpanel, this ALSO creates a sub domain of your primary name, so it can also be accessed using "tonys.website.com", with "tonys" being the sub domain.

Heres the science part: (Watch too many adverts on TV I think )

Having that as a sub domain is NOT a problem, and will NEVER be discovered, unless for example, you start visiting that sub domain with something like the google toolbar enabled. If you have the privacy settings on the google toolbar disabled, allowing it to track what you do and visit, then you WILL find that eventually, that sub.domain will turn up in google, thus Google WILL see both "tonys.com" AND "tonys.website.com" as being the same website, which is where you can "possibly" wind up with a problem, IF you do not set an exclusing within your robots.txt file to ban/block search engines for visiting the sub domain URL.

Brain hurting yet?

Wrong, it wont have a NEGATIVE affect at all, it just wont have as much of a positive affect as if the links come from different IP's, but it will have a positive affect, just not as great as different IP's. We have a lot of websites within our own network that link back to us, and it has NEVER had any negative affect what-so-ever in 10yrs, but...... it just doesnt have as much of a positive affect as having all those links come from different IP's.

So, its good, but not as good as it could be, I think might be a better way to describe it...

Sorry, that's what I meant...reading through my post made it sound like you will lose points with Google if you have several links from same IP which yeah, isn't true. I meant it wouldn't have a positive affect, just couldn't think of how to put it but wesh.co.uk explained it brilliantly.

Hello,

I will suggest you to go for Reseller Hosting , to satisfy your requirement, make sure you google the reviews for the company you select or shortlist them.

Sorry you're way off the mark there and Google is aware that everyone can't host their site on a seperate IP (have a watch of some of the Matt Cutts vids on youtube). You do gain benefit from the link, but a slightly decreased benefit if the IPs are the same. Saying such links give no benefit, I guess is a bit of sales ploy?

There is no sales ploy intended with the comment simply, just advice that to take full advantage of such a setup multiple IP locations are advisable and a common practice used by many SEO/web design and webhosting firms. I would agree that no benefit is perhaps a harsh view however there is a lesser benefit gained from a single ip compared to that of multiple ip locations.

Matt's advice as per your reference tends to follow that of Relevance such that taking an example of his being that "if you have 3 sites, mens-cloths.com, womens-cloths.com and childrens-cloths.com" as long as they are developed as separate sites with relevant links there will be no adverse effect as long as these are maintained etc.

However note his advice follows: "my personal advice is to do a redirect" when sites contain only small differences "as the user expects these really to be the same site" . As per his IP discussion or quash this was over 4 years ago now and why would Google otherwise register (4 years ago) as a registrar to gain WHOIS data to identify that such sites are owned by a common party.

However this is a SEO disucssion rather than being related to the OP's post, possibly a place for another thread.

Thanks for all the replies guys!

I really didn't expect it start an argument! I've been looking around and reading reviews but it's hard to determine who's credible with what they're saying.

At the minute I'm looking at http://www.hostdime.co.uk/ Anyone had any experience with this hosting?

I currently only have 2 sites which I will want hosting, and so I don't want to be spending too much monthly.

Thanks for your suggestions and advice! It's really appreciated

No arguement, just healthy debate I guess :)

Personally, I'd stick to a UK only host - there are a ton of good ones around. I recommend any of the following from personal experienc1e (both for personal sites an d work sites - use of couple of those to host a few hundred work sites) - tsohost.co.uk, vidahost.com and 34sp.com.

I'm looking for a host that offers multi-domain hosting as well and just had a look at tsohost, what's the speed like FTP wise? And uptime? Above all else the customer support

Cheers

heh, cool just put an order through with them, hopefully all goes well
