I've read some posts and searched around a bit and it seems that this HAS been covered before, so apologies for not understanding existing answers, I'm afraid I need it spelling out

 

I have a site (for the sake of argument): mysite.co.uk

 

I also host a mate's site his files are in: mysite.co.uk/mateyboy

He gets the subdomain: mateyboy.mysite.co.uk

He also buys the name: mateyboy.net

 

My problem is this: an employer looking for me googles mysite and top of the list is mateyboy.mysite.co.uk

 

How do I hide mateyboy.mysite.co.uk and mysite.co.uk/mateyboy from people looking for mysite?

 

I hope I've explained what's happening here, I'm afraid my vocabulary for describing this side of things is woefully limited - and may be the reason I am totally unable to find any answers. Any assistance, even for handy words to plug into the search engine would be much appreciated.

You could try telling the spiders to go away on his pages. Other than that, I don't see any other way you could do it, as technically his site is part of yours.

 

You'll get a better answer when the SEO people are around

With subdomains don't link anything directly to the subdomain folder (xxx.yyy.com or yyy.com/xxx). A subdomain is essentially a separate site from the main site (eve though you can reach it via the subdomain).

 

When you create a subdomain you assign the real domain that's going to be used and the DNS will automatically update to go to the correct place.

My hosting runs out in April, so I've decided to muck about with it - Have mysite.co.uk as just a url and have my files hosted along with mateyboys (and a couple of other mates) on subdomains_of.anothersite.net..

 

I know what you're saying DNS wise it will be all a bit of a null point, but it does get my professional site name out of mateyboy's url... which can't be a bad thing

You can also use the robots.txt to deny access for the spiders. Then they won't crawl the subdomain.

The thing is, I still want the pages in that subdomain to be indexed - even if I don't want the fact that they are actually in that subdomain to be.

 

Surely blocking spiders from looking at mateyboy.mysite.co.uk by changing the robots.txt in that folder will also block them from mateyboy.com which is the same folder under a different name?

 

Much as I hate mateyboy... his site still needs to be indexed - if no one can find it he'll give up and stop chipping in for the space

I have my main site as eggmandesigns.co.uk and my blog on eggrage.co.uk

eggrage is in fact a subdomain of eggmandesigns just like you said and is hosted in the same folder structure as you mentioned, but its not accessible on the subdomain, only on its own url.

As long as you can't access the subdomain (you can set this up in your hosting) then search engines should only index the domain which you specified to be applied to this site. The file structure shouldnt be a problem either, as this is simply where the files are being called from (server side), not the url structure that is displayed.
