Social site and budget

Featured Replies

Hi there guys.

iv got alot of ideas for a social site and just wondering on my budget you see. On how much to put a side.

My main question is how much would it cost to create a site like facebook?

My main question is how much would it cost to create a site like facebook?

That question just made my evening. Thank-you.

It was evaluated recently - it would cost you about $25,000,000,000. I'll start work tomorrow if you'd like?

If you were being serious - there are several paid/free social networking scripts available. They are all generic, but you can customise if you hire a developer. Creating a fully-blown Facebook clone from scratch would cost you £Thousands, or £Tens-Of-Thousands.

If you're planning to compete with Facebook - honestly, don't bother.

Thanks for your reply and your comment.

But it would be much appreciated if you we can keep this serious. I dont mind the criticism but clever answer are not good.

Ok maybe it would cost millions to mimic the FACEBOOK site. Only for the reason of the traffic!

Lets be realistic now. Youve watched the film how one person created Facebook. Ok maybe if the time he spent on it was converted into money maybe it would run in to the cost you mentioned above. But spread over more would equal little less time and less money.

But on the fact you stated " dont bother competing with facebook ". Well iv got to go ahead with it. Facebook got invented when MYSPACE was massive and he succeeded.. why because he was intelligent? had ideas? maybe...

Its time a new generation of social site hit the market. And i beleive i can make it with the right developers around me.

So if i could get intelligent replies about the budget on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

And soon as iv received enough replies in which i can run through and clarifier, i will be posting within this forum for developers to help me with this project.

To be fair to the OP, you are getting your figures confused here, and not by a short measure either. The £25 billion you mentioned is the companies worth, and is nothing to with the financial outlay of the creator in building Facebook. In other words, it may cost someone £25 billion to buy Facebook, but it sure as hell didn't cost that to create it.

The following is just what I estimate it would cost.

If you want it coded from scratch then you are looking at about £5,000 to £20,000.

If you don't mind using a free ready made script then you can probably hire a developer to customise it for you for about £1,000 to £2,000.

I would be interested to hear what unique features your site would have that other websites like Facebook and Bebo don't have. If your idea is genuinely unique and you don't have lots of money to throw around then your best bet would be to learn how to code yourself.

To be honest I have seen lots of people wanting to make the next Facebook, so your idea has to be unique.

exactly they all go and see a film and dream up a few ideas that they think will make them millions through doing no work and letting other developers help for a mythical 'profit' share.

Still, I too would be interested to hear what unique features it will have.

I'm not exactly experienced with the level of development that would go into a social networking site, but as mentioned above, your probably looking at at least the £5000+ mark, thats probably being fairly conservative, and just for the starting point.

With the position that facebook currently holds, it seems almost unfathomable to find someone who could even remotely compete with them, but of course thats in no way saying that if you have an idea, don't bother. Its always worth a shot if you definately feel your ideas are unique or tap into a missing (and actually desired) niche. If they don't, however, its probably not worth going ahead with.

I think its important to remember however, that though one person did indeed originally start coding up facebook, the social networking site has changed quite considerably since its origins. I highly doubt that he is and has been the only one coding up the site since those days. He may well have planted the seeds, but I'm sure a whole other team of talented (and well paid!) developers have enabled it to grow.

I did give a serious response too. I don't think you realise what you're trying to do here.

Ok, but cloning a site won't attract users - you need to be leading new ideas into the future. To do that you're going to need to be a hugely intellectual/creative person yourself, or have a deep pocket.

Lets be realistic now. Youve watched the film how one person created Facebook. Ok maybe if the time he spent on it was converted into money maybe it would run in to the cost you mentioned above. But spread over more would equal little less time and less money.

Mark Zuckerberg is, and was, extremely intelligent. He didn't need to ask questions like 'how much would it cost'. He knew, he knew what was desired, he knew what to do.

But on the fact you stated " dont bother competing with facebook ". Well iv got to go ahead with it. Facebook got invented when MYSPACE was massive and he succeeded.. why because he was intelligent? had ideas? maybe...

There's 'massive' and then there's 1 in 4 people you meet are active on it. There's well over 500 million active users on Facebook. Now, that's not a lot compared to the world's population - but look at the number of people who actually have Internet access. That's when it hits home. One in four.

Its time a new generation of social site hit the market. And i beleive i can make it with the right developers around me.

I've seen maybe 10 guys come through here in the past 6 months with exactly the same idea.

So if i could get intelligent replies about the budget on this it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm sorry my level of intellect doesn't meet your response criteria, but it's a forum - I'm a member.

I look forward to seeing the development of the project - I genuinely do - but please stop and seriously think about what you're trying to do before continuing. Facebook has overtaken Google in more than one way. If I said to you, I'm going to make a new search engine and kill Google - you'd laugh. It's the same thing.

I'm trying to get across to you that attempting to seriously compete with Facebook is massively unlikely to lead to a successful end. Creating a successful social network, however, is not. It needs to be a unique place - cloning is not going to work.

I think social networking sites are just as prone as a lot of other lifestyle products, in that they only have a limited life span. User habits change, and brand loyalty is for the most part a fallacy nowadays. If there is a better alternative, people would use it. I too would be interested in how you are going to improve upon Facebook.

Facebook will decline in favour eventually, I think, and there could be room there for something new. As said, it would have to bring something new to the table, and be different enough to generate real interest in it.

I understand my ideas would have to be unique. I would not venture into this with copying ideas. An my idea is not to clone facebook. If my ideas are unique and i can market it in the right way to the right people then i can see this working.

I would like to publish my ideas for you guys to have a scan through and tell me what you think. But im not risking somebody creating the site before me or somebody using ideas.

This is going to be going ahead guys and when it does i will still post it in this forum.

I would like this site to be wrote from scratch and the rough mark up budget seems reasonable to me.

(zed) is that what people do on here ask people to build it for a percentage of the profit share, with no down payment?

Im not looking for that my friend. It will be something i may consider as well of down payment.

If you are looking to build a Social Networking site on a tight budget you may want to look at Joomla! CMS and use http://www.jomsocial.com/.

It would no doubt suit your needs if you are looking to start small and build on a stable platform.
