Hi all,

I want to get into web design but do not know where to start! Far too much info to take in!

I am a computer user but do not work with them.

I would like any advice on what courses are the best to start with and their costs etc.

Compared to most of you i would say my level of computer knowledge is not too good,however i am willing and able to learn.

 

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Also you say you want to become a web designer? Do you mean you want to be able to make the design and then code it? But yeah, W3 is a nice place to start.

 

You may also want to download Notepad++, its great for writing your own code in as it has pretty colours and you can indent stuff properly

With regards to courses - I wouldn't bother. Just my opinion of course, but most of them (depending on what you're studying ) are simply not worth it. The desire to suceed and a willingness to learn is all you need.

 

With regards to learning - I found that disecting a ready made template helped a lot. Pulling it apart, learning what does what, how it works, how it's put together, that sort of thing.

 

There are plenty of tutorials out there that can help. Tony's link being one of them, and like he said you can always ask questions along the way.

You may already have Notepad on your computer, but this is so so so much better. Coloured codes look far bettewr and make life easier.

 

Try Youtube .. this is the first of a series of tutorials which I used. the guy is quite witty at times (IMO)

Okay, now do you want to be a web designer and use Ps, Fw, Ai etc to create the graphical side of things.

Whatever one it is, there are different ways to go about it. You could learn both if you really wanted. Design is imo, trickier then development, as when designing it you have to think of the colours etc, but when you develop the site, you already have the sliced images, and all as you have to do, is code the site so everything is in place and organised. But like the others said, go on google, youtube etc. see what you can find, you will learn a lot from this forum alone, i know i sure did! ask around if you need a hand, and let us know what you need help on, then we can help you with all o our knowledge

I totally agree. I started with no knowledge of HTML and CSS whatsoever. But I played around with it and with the help of tutorials, trial and error I am now at the stage of starting my own business. I have disected many wordpress themes too just to see how everything works. =) I dont think courses and certificates matter, as long as you can provide a good portfolio with clean codes then thats all that counts. -- and of course hard work and drive!
