November 29, 201015 yr Web sites that are hosted on UNIX and Windows servers can be accessed universally. The difference between the two operating system lies in terms of the software they provide to server data. Windows can always provide better software services for all purposes. In terms of reliability, UNIX is just a few steps ahead since it is known to be extremely stable and does run for years without rebooting. However, Windows can manage to meet the requirements of modern websites far better than UNIX. Windows is used where Microsoft products are into application like, MS Access databases, ASP for delivering dynamic content, and VBScript for site enhancements. UNIX is not devised to accommodate the mentioned technologies. Therefore those who are in need of these technologies will ultimately have to depend on Windows. Moreover what UNIX provides, is already there with Windows.
November 29, 201015 yr Windows can always provide better software services for all purposes. Is that really your opinion? Take into consideration that most windows applications are commercially developed, most linux apps as linux itself are open-source projects. That means there usually is a lot of money and a team of full time developers in the equation. Linux itself doesnt bring a technical limit to develop "good" software for it. Linux furthermore isnt only more stable, but very secure by design. There also are great linux based commercial solutions like red hat enterprise. On the server side I tell you my personal opinion: The internet as it is today would never have been there, if those millions of servers all had to pay licencing fees to microsoft. Affordable hosting wouldnt be there neither. If you search for an asp.net supporting host you'll literaly have to search for a while and pay. I even think, things like this forum wouldnt exist, or only be run by very rich people. I had my share with programming asp.net web apps. I found it great at first, cause I could write web apps in C# - but this comes at a price: Applications tend to get slow, bloated and hard to maintain, if you aren't a real pro in it. I aint. By this I didnt mean you cant write good apps with asp.net, it surely is great, maybe even better for bigger web apps than other approaches like php or ruby, if you have the time, the money and professional developers. (<- tell that to a ruby guy and listen to the sound when his hand hits his forehead )
November 29, 201015 yr @skyvia REALLY? Windows is a redundant technology when it comes to web servers. ASP and .net are barely used any more; in fact, I don't know if they are even supported by microsoft. Unix represents 40 years of stable networking development, and is far more secure than any windows OS. Not only that, but its largely open source code base means that you can use all the important web languages easily and with minimal effort. Windows servers are only really useful in a business environment where users are dependent on MS Office. Why else would you want to use it?
December 29, 201015 yr As of me, Windows hosting is the best.Because The windows web hosting plan includes Access databases, which can be run only on a Microsoft windows platform.
December 29, 201015 yr Hi, Both the platforms are defined according to the customers because some customers are very well known to windows so they opt windows and others go for Linux. Windows and Linux both are good and has numerous features according to their platform.
