September 30, 201015 yr OK so I'm thinking about advertising my services online and have opted to use either facebook advertising or google adwords to advertise. What are other peoples experience with these and what would you recommend to be the best way to advertise as a web designer within the Bristol area?
October 5, 201015 yr Maybe this is really harsh - but as a digital marketer I often get a lot of web design ads on facebook I also tend to click them - because they haven't been targeted well. I think Adwords can be quite effective if you pick the right keywords - Facebook when targeted correctly are insanely good. Problem is if you are basing it off of interests on Facebook the probability of getting web design work (during peoples leisure time) is probably relatively low. Upto you - but Facebook can really hone in your target market very cost effectively (as long as you pick them right - and you dont just show the ads to your competitors who will try to bankrupt you)

I've read somewhere that a business should spend 10% of their income on advertising? does that sound about right?

Ummm - It depends what products - some products may initially advertise upto 50% of their projected income (because of the sheer addictiveness of their product). £50 is a good test amount with the right targeting. The thing is with advertising - if it works - then it SHOULD pay for itself 3-5 times over. Otherwise quite frankly it isn't a) doing its job or worth investing the time and money into.
